Well, here's PetronixConsoleOS 5.0 (PCOS 5.0) Beta 5! And, there's a fair lot going on here.
So, what's new?
Well, here's PetronixConsoleOS 5.0 (PCOS 5.0) Beta 5! And, there's a fair lot going on here.
So, what's new?
The OS itself (internally):
The internal code for Beta 5 has been "insanely" optimized. Basically, PCOS 5.0 only runs forever loops when necessary and doesn't run a quadrillion forever loops (mostly Aero3D-related forever loops) in parallel as soon as it boots up. These optimizations are especially great for lower-end PCs, meaning that you finally don't need at least a Core i5 to run PCOS 5.0 smoothly, at least not if you're gonna be using only Beta 5 and later. This is especially great because, well, if it isn't obvious enough yet, it saves resources and allows weaker hardware to "breathe".
New Boot Animation!
Sometimes, it shines too bright...
New Login Screen! (ABOUT DAMN TIME PCOS GETS AN ACTUAL LOGIN SCREEN)
Some people asked me before if PetronixConsoleOS will ever get a login screen. Well, here. 5.0 has a login screen now. Might as well make some for older versions as well.
Removed features:
Aero3D Peek
Heh, the second time a PetronixConsoleOS version gets updated where a feature is removed... Anyways, so, Aero3D Peek has been removed in Beta 5. Now, evidently speaking, when I asked some people who used PCOS 5.0 on Discord if they are okay with me removing Aero3D Peek. One person said that it's been probably used by few people, another person said that they didn't even know this was a thing (can't blame them).
Now, for those who don't know, what even is Aero3D Peek? Well, it was first introduced in PCOS Flower during it's development. It was essentially supposed to be an equivalent to "Show Desktop" in Windows 7. But... it's flaw was that it heavily depended on forever loops. And, since it's a very minor thing that is basically sitting in the corner and wasting resources even when not used at all, it was removed.
I may bring back Aero3D Peek in Beta 6, but don't take my words for confirmation. I haven't fully decided yet.
Control Panel:
Personalization
Regional Settings
System
The Control Panel now has a lot more going on.
In Personalization, the Change Screensaver, Change Start Button and Aero3D Basic Settings are now options here. The Change Screensaver thing isn't ready yet, but changing screensavers should become a ready feature in Beta 6, hopefully. The Change Start Button is self-explanatory and a feature copied from PCOS 2.0.
In Regional Settings, there are two options; Date and Time. Basically, you get to choose there how you want the date and time to be shown (Date: day/month/year (DD/MM/YYYY) or month/day/year (MM/DD/YYYY), Time: 24-hour format or 12-hour format).
In System, there is one new option; Battery. In Battery, you will be able to either show or hide your battery's status (if the device you're running PCOS 5.0 Beta 5 on has a battery). PCOS 5.0 uses the "Battery" extension in Turbowarp to access information on the battery's status. Surprisingly, it's quite accurate, but note that this may not work properly in some devices.
Oh yeah. Speaking of Change Start Button, there are currently only... 2 options. Yeah. Maybe not too exciting, but hey, i'm still developing PCOS 5.0. (IT'S IN THE BETA STAGE 2 YEARS NOW) No rush. More will come eventually.
100% + charging
90%
50%
5% + charging
And also, speaking of the Battery thing, here are how some of the icons look like.
Funny enough, on a desktop computer, it will show that the battery is "full" and "charging", even though desktop computers don't run on batteries.
PetronixConsoleOS Store (PCOS Store) and Colecto-points:
New, longer message in the PCOS Store. The Store itself is pretty much almost functionally... functional. It works like it's supposed to.
You now get 150 Colecto-points for free instead of 100 like in Beta 4. You can't buy the same item more than once, you can't buy an item if you don't have enough Colecto-Points (CPs), you can't go to debt. Basically, no "potential inflation", no "potential financial crisis"... hopefully.
Collectibles have "returned"! You can actually go and collect them. They appear randomly in the desktop in random places. Keep an eye out for them!
The catalog ever so expands. Now there are 7 things to buy instead of 3 like in Beta 4.
Also, Petronix Hexagon Advanced! for PCOS is basically a cut-down version of Petronix Hexagon Advanced!. Click here if you want to check out the full game!
In Personalization in the PCOS Store, if you used Beta 4 before, you may now notice how there isn't an Aero3D Texture option anymore. That's because I want to make Aero3D Texture a feature in PetronixConsoleOS Leaf. (new canon in-between release to be made after 5.0 leaked?!?!?!?1!!?!!?!!!!?!?!)
Other changes:
Quick Menu
The Quick Menu got updated a bit... again. This time, the Close Quick Menu option now has a close button as it's "icon" and it's "select" costume is red instead of blue like in other options. Also, if you want to change Aero3D Settings, you now access the settings either via the Control Panel or via Quick Menu. Also, it has a new "open" sound, which I think sounds more fitting considering how other Quick Menu sounds sound like.
New "This PC" icon
Well, new This PC icon. Has a bit more detail going on. Not sure what else to say here. It's just an icon change.
Shorter "About" window
About (or About PetronixConsoleOS / About PCOS, if you call it that) now shows only information about PCOS 5.0 and some other things.
PCOSXplorer
PCOSXplorer now actually "loads" the home page of DavidPetronix's Website Of Goods, instead of just being a static image. Probably makes it feel a bit more realistic.
Start Menu
In the Start Menu, the Shutdown button is now only red, while the Log Off button is only green.
Start Button
When the Start Button is clicked, it gets smaller for a second and then returns to it's normal size a second later. Kinda like how you press a button. That kind of thing.
MP3 Player
The MP3 Player window has been fixed a bit.
PCOS Defend
The PCOS Defend window has been fixed a bit.
Taskbar
The Taskbar slides up when you log in to the desktop, and it slides down when you shutdown or log off. Just a little extra detail.
Bug Fixes:
There weren't any bugs reported or found in Beta 4, so no bug fixes in Beta 5.
You may have noticed that, in some pictures, there is this "Normal Edition" being featured. Well, PetronixConsoleOS 5.0 will start having different editions! However... not like PetronixConsoleOS 4.0 (Professional, Home, Enterprise).
If you want to find out about these editions, click here.
Well, that's all of the changes! Here are the links!
Don't wanna keep you waiting...
