In this course, I explored instructional technology in depth, beginning with its definition and progressing through its rich history. Examining current problems and developments in instructional technology provided a modern perspective on the field, deepening my understanding of its evolving landscape. Additionally, delving into learning theories, instructional technology frameworks, and various adoption models has significantly shaped and refined my personal philosophy of instructional technology. This comprehensive study not only enhanced my knowledge but also guided the development of a well-rounded approach to integrating instructional technology into educational settings.
The various communities and professional organizations in instructional technology offered valuable insights into the scope of the field, as well as opportunities for engagement and professional development. One particularly invaluable skill I gained was using RefWorks for bibliographic management and navigating the University’s online library databases to research instructional technology journals. These skills have strengthened my ability to critically assess research and efficiently manage academic resources.
The knowledge and skills gained from this course are directly applicable to my current role as an educator, instructional designer, and researcher. Understanding the historical context and current trends in instructional technology allows me to better integrate technology into teaching and learning. The exposure to various IT frameworks and technology adoption models will guide my decision-making in technology implementation, both in professional and personal settings.
The practical components of the course were particularly beneficial. Hands-on experience with online library databases and RefWorks greatly enhanced my research capabilities. Participating in an online instructional technology community provided real-world applications of the theories and concepts learned. Additionally, the introduction to software tools such as Adobe Express significantly aided my learning experience.
The support and guidance provided throughout the course played a key role in my learning experience. The graduate teaching assistant (Mr. Willie) was especially helpful—his knowledge and approachable manner greatly improved our comprehension and engagement with the course material, making the learning process both enjoyable and effective. I also found the provision of guidance and examples from previous assignments extremely beneficial, as it helped clarify expectations and provided useful hints on how to complete my tasks. I can confidently say that all aspects of the course worked well for me.
One area for potential enhancement could be the inclusion of more case studies or real-world examples demonstrating how instructional technology is applied in various educational settings. This would provide additional depth and context, further bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Overall, this course was a highly valuable learning experience that expanded and refined my understanding of instructional technology. It struck an excellent balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application, making it both relevant and applicable to my professional journey. With the solid foundation gained from this course, I look forward to applying what I have learned in my future endeavors.
