Understanding Autism Through Patient Voices
This training project helps registered nurses build empathy and understanding by engaging with interactive vignettes written by autistic individuals (male and female). Each vignette presents a real-life scenario from the patient’s perspective, followed by a reflective “choose-your-own-response” experience. Rather than aiming to change autistic patients, the goal is to educate health professionals about autism spectrum disorder in a respectful, patient-centered way. Nurses receive feedback after each scenario and are invited to share their thoughts on the clarity, tone, and usefulness of the material—helping us refine the training to better support inclusive, effective care. This project is with my coauthor Tong Li.
