Personal Statement: As a multidisciplinary generalist nearing the completion of my PhD, I aim to use my economic and scientific skill set to tackle pressing environmental and political issues. My proficiency lies in analysing complex, interconnected socio-economic systems, enabling the formulation of more effective interventions and resilient policies.
Work History
Stockholm University, Economics PhD Candidate. (Sep 2017-Present)
My thesis developed a network-based framework to understand the informal enforcement of norms using a rational agent approach. The doctoral program included a high level theoretical and practical education in econometrics and empirical analysis with a focus on causal inference. I have also taught three Masters and PhD level courses in macroeconomics.
My research contributes to Cooperation Theory by addressing the impact of network structure and economic interaction patterns on trust levels, and the sustainment of pro-social behaviour. It also offers new insights into the scope and level of punishment for norm violation and the variance in societal norms.
Stockholm University, Masters in Economics. (Sept 2015-July 2017)
To apply to the Phd program I needed to study at the graduate level. My thesis focused on the issue of rent control, and was done in collaboration with SABO the Swedish rental housing organization.
Larssons Plåtslageri. (Sept 2008-July 2015)
Position: Working with all aspects of (plåtslageri) roofing and stainless steel work.
I acquired the necessary practical skills, planned and executed major projects, and collaborated with the owner to develop systems for job profitability analysis, facilitating business expansion by resolving cash flow issues and streamlining business decisions.
Master’s Thesis: Plasma Fusion Research Group, Alfven Laboratory, KTH. (Aug 2007-July 2008)
My Master’s thesis focused on helping to develop and test a new mathematical method of solving systems of partial differential equations. This method has the potential to overcome many of the limitations inherent in the current numerical techniques used to analyse boundary instabilities in plasma fusion.
Prior to this I studied quantum mechanics and electrodynamics at Stockholm University, while supporting myself editing English for Masters and PhD students on a freelance basis.
SY Thunder of Southampton, Oyster 70, 21m sloop. (Jan 2004 - Dec 2005)
Position: Captain/Engineer
I managed and maintained a yacht for a private owner. Led refit programs in multiple countries, supervised contracts, and cultivated motivated teams. Navigating cultural differences and implementing innovative problem-solving strategies I notably enhanced the yacht’s condition, organization, and crew morale.
Melbourne University: Bachelor in Physics. (Feb 2002 - Jan 2004)
Two years studying physics, specialising in electrodynamics and quantum mechanics.
SY Saudade, Royal Huisman, 35m Sloop. (June 2001- Oct 2001)
Position: First Mate
In charge of the deck maintenance and repair, sailing and guest recreation in the Mediterranean.
SY Sincerity, Baglietto (1928), 30m Classic Ketch. (Jan 2000 - March 2001)
Position: Captain/Engineer
Sailing and maintaining this high profile yacht, operating charters in both the Caribbean and in the USA, including the planning and execution of three Trans-Atlantic voyages.
From December 1998 to January 2000 I travelled in Australia, Indonesia and Europe and then worked in the professional yachting industry on a number of different yachts. This involved several refits, charters and ocean passages totalling 11000 sea miles. During this time, I learnt to sail and taught myself celestial navigation.
New Zealand Work History
