"Longhaired Redneck" is a song co-written and recorded by David Allan Coe. It was released in January 1976 as the lead single from Coe's album of the same name. The song is notable for its direct reference to the outlaw movement in country music during the 1970s, with which Coe was associated, as well as the chorus which features Coe impersonating classic country artists Ernest Tubb, "Whisperin'" Bill Anderson, and Merle Haggard. The song also makes reference to Johnny Rodriguez stealing an Angora goat from a ranch near Utopia, Texas owned by Uvalde County Judge Bob Davis, which ultimately led to Rodriguez being discovered. The song peaked at number 17 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and at number 23 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart. It was written by Coe with Jimmy Rabbitt, who is also a popular radio DJ in Texas.
The song expresses Coe's frustration with the country music industry and his desire to be recognized as a genuine artist rather than a novelty act. He sings about how country DJs do not play his songs or come to see him perform, and how he faces prejudice from bikers, cowboys, hippies, and loudmouths in the bars where he plays. He also criticizes the Nashville establishment for being too conservative and conformist, and claims that he can sing better than any of them. He declares that he is proud of being a longhaired redneck who loves his country music.
The song has been covered by several artists, including Hank Williams III, Confederate Railroad, and Aaron Lewis. It is considered one of Coe's signature songs and a classic of the outlaw country genre.
Lyrics
Country DJs knows that I'm an outlaw They'd never come to see me in this dive
Where bikers stare at cowboys who are laughin' at the hippies
Who are prayin' they'll get out of here alive
The loudmouth in the corner's gettin' to me
Talkin' 'bout my earrings and my hair
I guess he ain't read the sign that says I've been to prison
Someone oughta warn him 'fore I knock him off his chair
'Cause my long hair just can't cover up my redneck I've won every fight I've ever fought
And I don't need some turkey tellin' me that I ain't country
Sayin' I ain't worth a damn old ticket that he bought
'Cause I can sing all them songs about Texas And I still do all the sad ones that I know
They tell me I look like Merle Haggard
And sound a lot like David Allan Coe
And the barmaid in the last town that we played in
Knew the words to every song I wrote
She said Jimmy Rabbit turned her on to my last album
Just about the time the jukebox broke
Yeah, Johny Rodriguez is my friend
He gave me his old guitar when he got out of jail
I taught him how to sing them prison songs
To a bunch of men who knew what livin' meant
'Cause my long hair just can't cover up my redneck I've won every fight I've ever fought
And I don't need some turkey tellin' me that I ain't country
Sayin' I ain't worth a damn old ticket that he bought
'Cause I can sing all them songs about Texas And I still do all the sad ones that I know
They tell me I look like Merle Haggard
And sound a lot like David Allan Coe
But the country DJs won't play me
'Cause I don't sound like Charlie Pride or Charley Daniels or Merle Haggard or George Jones or Johnny Cash or Roger Miller or Jim Reeves or Willie Nelson or Waylon Jennings or Ernest Tubb or Whispering Bill Anderson or Porter Wagoner or Hank Williams
