The Front garden faces south west and receives a great deal of sun from around 10 AM onward. The area of ground is the same as the read section with the house in the centre of the plot. This means alot was wasted by driveway and plain grass area. We had a need to add space to two cars that could park side by side and we felt the back garden wastn the place for vegetables etc which would get the majority of sun.
Although the back garden gets good sun at the Northern end it suffers from House Shadows. So we opted to build something different and go for a front garden that allowed some sitting as well as growing !
We had the tree removed and front grass area dug away and a set of Beds built:
The right hand side of the drive we had walled using sleepers creating a clear line
These stretched down the left side of the Drive, creating space for cars as well as raised beds
We then planned and built a series of further raised beds covering the remaining areas and creating a mid section for gardening and a enclosed area for sitting, screened from the road, so we could sit out on the Sun!
After building the Beds around the side we developed the center beds and some lower central beds loosely based on the original front garden design plan.
This created the sitting space and the small herb bed along with the central beds for vegetables
Centralised Beds were created for small vegetable plots, we used 20mm Plastic PVC frames with mesh to keep the cats off.
The sleepers are standard large size, tanalised, garden sleepers 2400 long * 100mm*150mm
The smaller bed in the foreground is a herb bed, limited in width for ease of access and allows for more space in-front of the garage.
The ground cover was packed earth and hard core stone with a layer of matting between, however to stop the rain water run off travelling toward the house we used another layer of matting and recycled plastic grid with 10mm pea gravel to cover the are surrounding the beds
The sitting area is screened from the neighbours and from the font by a trellis, set into the center of the main lateral bed, this allows for greenery cover and makes for a nice surrounding.
We are collecting around 360 litres in the three tanks, linked together in a cascade
The remaining drive will be finished in recycled plastic grid and 10mm pea gravel
