DAVE GIZZO (RIP) AND WSOU - F*ckin Gizzo
Taken from a Facebook post
-
One night in September of 1986, a college kid by the name of Dave Gizzo came up to the DJ booth and introduced himself to me.
He mentioned he was a semi-regular at L'Amour and heard me do guest spots on K-Rock.
He wanted to invite me on his new radio show at Seton Hall's WSOU.
I told him, I never heard of it and he said that is why he wanted me on the show.
He mentioned they just flipped formats and needed the "Chuck/L'Amour" rub.
That began an awesome 3-year friendship.
My first appearance on WSOU was huge.
Dave's college professor said the reaction was incredible and told Dave he believed he was on to something by befriending me.
Dave asked if I would come back and if I had ideas to help get the word out.
I came back a week or so later and we planned out a game plan to put WSOU on the map.
I worked out with the owners that I was going to let Gizzo co-host a night with me (intro bands, etc.) and the L'Amour/WSOU relationship was off and running.
When Gizzo was no longer at Seton Hall, he assumed I would push him aside, but that wasn't the case.
I hired him to DJ at the club on my "AYI Entertainment" nights and he would act as my assistant with other projects. He would wind up road managing for bands I managed and was a close confidante.
When I left the club in November 1988, he along with Alex and others were in discussions to share the DJ position, but Dave declined because he didn't want to work there without me.
He came with me to a rehearsal and showcase of a Manhattan band that was interested in working with me. I had L'Amour put them on as openers for Jane's Addiction in exchange for me coming back to host the show. That night was my last "L'Amour night".
I went on to do a few things at other places and asked Dave if he wanted to become involved and he said he wanted to focus on his new position at a security firm.
People don't realize the importance he had in the scene.
He was the main reason WSOU started their Heavy Metal format and the person that approached me to help them get noticed.
He did a lot for me as well as the club and was one of my closest friends from 86-89.
I will miss you Gizzo and know that when Alex called me to tell me the heart-wrenching news of your passing, we discussed how you don't get the credit you should have received.
I hope you know you always did with me and I miss you buddy.
*"F*ckin Gizzo" was what L'Amour bar manager Ned used to call him on my AYI nights.
There were no owners there and Ned would get drunk and laugh and just say "F*ckin Gizzo" over and over.
