Animals
Asian Water Monitor
Varanus salvator
The Asian water monitor is one of the largest lizards in the world and lives all across Southeast Asia, making it one of the most widespread monitor lizards in the world. As their name implies, they have an affinity for water, inhabiting areas around lakes, rivers, ponds, swamps, and other water filled habitats, even man-made ones as they have been found in sewers. They eat fish, frogs, rodents, birds, eggs, crabs, molluscs, insects, other lizards, and anything else they can catch.
Chital
Axis axis
The chital, also known as the axis or spotted deer, is a species of deer native to the Indian subcontinent. They are commonly in small to moderately sized herds, but herds reaching over 100 individuals have been documented. Grazers as well as browsers, the chital mainly feed on grasses and fruits throughout the year. The name "chital" comes from the Sanskrit word "citrala" meaning "variegated" or "spotted".
Clouded Leopard
Neofelis nebulosa
The clouded leopard is a wild cat and the smallest of the panthers, being found across jungle and forested regions of Southeast Asia. These cats get their name from the large blotches, spots, and stripes covering their fur, being reminiscent of clouds in shape and proving excellent camouflage. These cats love to climb, using their excellent arboreal capabilities to hunt birds and monkeys.
Gharial
Gavialis gangeticus
The gharial is a rather unique and shy species of crocodilian native to riverways and wetlands across India. These critically endangered reptiles almost exclusively eat fish and crustaceans, swallowing them whole. Their name derives from Hindustani word 'ghara' for an earthen pot, referring to the nasal protuberance present on the snouts of males. As they age, their hide darkens, with exceptionally old indidivuals being almost black in colour.
Kiang
Equus kiang
The kiang, also known as the Tibetan wild ass, khyang, or gorkhar, is a species of wild donkey native to the Tibetan Plateau, inhabiting alpine meadows and shrublands. With males being as heavy as 880 lb, kiang are the largest of the wild donkeys. During the winter, kiang adorn a thick coat of hair to keep warm, shedding it off in the summer months. It is possible that the kiang had some influence on the myth of the unicorn.
Lion-Tailed Macaque
Macaca silenus
The lion-tailed macaque, as its name would imply, is an Indian species of macaque sporting a lion-like tail as well as a just as lion-like mane. The lion-tailed macaque is a rainforest animal, often found in the upper canopy of forests and jungles, feeding on fruits, seeds, flowers, insects, and small vertebrates they come across. Compared to other macaques, they are more avoidant of humans, though habitat destruction has made encounters with this endangered monkey more frequent.
Nilgai
Boselaphus tragocamelus
The nilgai is the largest antelope in Asia, being found most commonly across the northern regions of India. While females sport a tan hide, males are a deep blueish-silver in colour, which is where their name comes from, meaning "blue bull" in Hindi. Nilgai feed on various grasses and shrubbery and typically live in small herds, with females typically only interacting with males during the breeding season, who otherwise from separate herds or live alone.
Sulawesi Babirusa
Babyrousa celebensis
The Sulawesi babirusa is a pig found on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi as well as some other nearby islands. Male babirusa have highly curved upper tusks, used as display structures when courting sows. In rare cases, the tusks can grow long enough to curve back and pierce their own skull as they age. Babirusa are one of the oldest living members of the pig family.
Sumatran Rhinoceros
Dicerorhinus sumatrensis
The Sumatran rhinoceros, also known as the hairy rhinoceros, is a very rare species of rhinoceros once found all across Southeast Asia, but only now found in small pockets in Sumatra and Borneo, with an estimated population of fewer than 80 individuals. Like most rhino species, the Sumatran rhino has been overhunted for many centuries, mainly for their horn, leading to the current state of their population.
Sun Bear
Helarctos malayanus
The sun bear is found throughout Southeast Asia, including Borneo and Sumatra. It is the smallest bear in the world, shorter than the average human even while standing up! Like most bears, these omnivores will eat any assortment of plants and animals that comes their way. Its name comes from the orangey-yellow patch of fur on its chest, while its strong fondness for honey has earned the nickname of "honey bear".
Wild Yak
Bos mutus
The wild yak is native to the Himalayan mountain range and is the largest animal in the Himalayas, rivaling in size to bison of North America and Europe. It primary grazes in the Tibetan Plateau, eating plants like herbs and losses. Both males and females have impressive horns to fend off wolves and snow leopards from the herd. Males have been known to fight very aggressively, being documented wandering into pastures of their much smaller cousin, the domoestic yak, and severly injuring or even killing the resident bull and stealing some of their females.
