The Best Part Of 'Dating Around' For Gurki Had Nothing To Do With Her Dates.
Reality dating shows are usually designed with a single goal in mind: for their contestants to find everlasting love. Netflix's Dating Around is less high-stakes, though its subjects are still encouraged to go on a second date with one of the five potential partners they've just spent an evening with. So when Gurki Basra didn't choose anyone on Dating Around , it not only deviated from the show's general format, it defied the fairytale ending we've been conditioned to want — both for ourselves and on TV.
"To go on a second date with these guys — it just kind of felt like I was leading them on and kind of forcing it," Gurki tells Bustle. "Even though they were nice guys, and I did think about, 'Oh, maybe I’ll meet up with Manny again, he was fun,' I didn't really see myself getting married to Manny or any of that. So I didn't really understand the point of picking somebody just to finish the story of the show."
Gurki was encouraged to audition by a friend who was also applying to be on Dating Around, and she went into the experience cynical, but open to meeting someone. When she reached the final stages of casting, she made it clear to the producers that she wasn't going to comply with the manipulation often associated with reality TV.
"I told the producers . 'I don't know how this genre of TV works, but reality TV is often highly produced or they tell you to do things. If you guys are going to tell me, 'Oh, you have to hit it off with this guy, or say [something scripted]. I'm not gonna do that,''" she says.
Luckily, that was exactly what the Dating Around team was trying to counteract. She says producers were "totally fine" with the fact that she wanted to go through the show as authentically as possible, even if that meant denying viewers a neat, satisfying conclusion. After all, Gurki says, that's just how it works out sometimes.
"That's the reality of dating, right? How many times do you go on a second date? Not that many," Gurki explains. "You go on a lot of first dates that suck, or that are average, or that are OK. But you're not like, super stoked to go on a second date."
One person she definitely wasn't going to see again was Justin, who, after sailing by a few red flags (he once made an ex-girlfriend give away her cat for him), berated Gurki for getting married even though she wasn't entirely sure about it. She tried to explain the cultural pressure put on her as a Punjabi woman, and that she was young and unsure of herself, but he insisted she was a "liar." And while it was a painful experience, Gurki says it made her think a lot about why she felt compelled to indulge him, even when it would have been totally appropriate for her to put him in his place and walk away.
"Watching it, I was like, 'Oh my god, he's a total douchebag, why was I so nice to this guy?'" Gurki reflects. "I was very surprised at the level of judgment women deal with going into dates. I think we don't know it because we're so used to it, and we just go through with it, and we just handle it a certain way. I felt terrible [on the date] and I wanted to scream at this guy. But I kept my composure, because you're used to keeping your composure when you hear judgment, or some guy who doesn't like something you said. I think it's a subtle thing."
The support she's received from viewers now that the episode's aired has been reassuring for Gurki, and revisiting her experience with Justin has helped heal wounds that existed even before the show. As she explained in an interview with Vulture, many of her friends and family members were critical of her decision to get divorced — so much so that, for several months, her brother was the only person she'd give her phone number to. She had to cut out all of the negative energy in order to move on.
"I didn't realize until I watched the show, but it brought up a lot of shame and bullsh*t that I dealt with when I was getting divorced, [when I received judgment] from my friends or the Indian community," she tells Bustle. "[But] watching the show … I felt a lot of closure. With people giving me support, I feel like I got all the support that I wish I would've had going through my divorce, and being single after that and trying to date."
Since filming wrapped, Gurki's kept in touch with all of her dates except for Justin. When we spoke, she even had plans to meet up with Manny and his new girlfriend to talk about the show. And despite not meeting anyone, she says she'd absolutely do the Dating Around experience all over again, because it affirmed that being her honest self is more validating than any man.
"When I was younger, I wasn't necessarily truthful about the fact that I sucked as a wife too. Even though my husband cheated, both of us sucked," Gurki says. "This sounds so f*cking cheesy, so I can't believe I'm that person out [there] saying these things, [but I'm realizing that] staying true to what I feel and being able to voice that is OK . and it's the way I should be leading my life. That's been the biggest takeaway — just being honest and being myself is A-OK."
Now, Gurki is teaching that to everyone watching, too.
Netflix viewers left shocked over Gurki and Justin's disaster date on Dating Around.
18 February 2019, 14:00.
Things got awkward during episode 2 of Dating Around when Justin and Gurki had a tense exchange.
Netflix's Dating Around is already poised to be your new reality TV obsession. A diverse set of singletons embark on a series of dates that have sweet, awkward, and amusing moments all cut together. The daters are adorable, the banter is passable, and you'll watch as strangers open up to each other in this highly constructed version of a reality dating show. In episode 2 of Dating Around, singleton Gurki has a particularly troubling interaction with her date, Justin, that has left the internet with strong feelings.
People are sympathising with Gurki, a 36-year-old jewellery buyer living in New York City, who appeared on the show and went on dates with five different guys. Most of the dates went fine, but a tense argument with Justin had the internet strongly in her corner.
Gurki's date with Justin started off ok.
The pair exchanged banter and anecdotes over drinks at a cute bar. Justin shared a story about his ex-girlfriend's cat (. ) and Gurki opened up a little about getting married young and some of her family's cultural expectations about marriage.
It wasn't until Gurki and Justin headed to an after hours spot that things got a little bit heated.
The topic of love and marriage came up again over the course of their conversation and things took a messy turn.
"When you're in love you put the other person first," Justin explained.
"But that doesn't mean a part of you disappears," says Gurki.
"How do you know? You got divorced at 32," Justin fired back. Ouch.
You can watch the entire tense exchange below.
Obviously, Gurki didn't open up about her past to have it brought back up in a disagreement and people were not happy about Justin's behaviour.
I’m watching that Dating Around Netflix show and on the Gurki episode and this guy is just yelling at her on a date wtf are men.
I watched an episode of @Netflix's "Dating Around" so this Indian girl Gurki was explaining her divorce and the intricacies of Indian wedding culture to this dude Justin. And homeboy shuts her down, talks over her, fails to empathize, imposes his ideals, calls her a liar. WTF.
I'm watching #DatingAround and the episode with Gurki, a Punjabi woman, is explaining the cultural pressures of being married (including arranged marriage) to some white fuckboy Justin who talks over her and calls her a liar and honestly I'm just so mad.
In the end, Gurki chose HERSELF and took HERSELF out on a shopping spree instead of going on a second date with any of the guys.

Dating Around's Gurki Basra Goes on 2nd Date with Show's Director.
Gurki Basra couldn't find love on Dating Around, but now she has revealed to Oprah Magazine that she fell for the show's director off-camera.
Many Dating Around fans would remember the jewelry buyer Gurki Basra from the first season. During her episode, we don't see her go on a second date, but casually (and happily) walk on the New York streets, still looking for a perfect match. Now, she has announced that she found love off-camera and is dating the show's director. Her current boyfriend is Dating Around 's director James Adolphus. Destiny, right?
The format of the show allowed Gurki to go on five blind dates with five distinct personalities. Throughout the dates, she discussed her Punjabi-American family background, culture, and previous relationship, which ended up in divorce. She revealed that she got married because of societal pressure, even though she had doubts about her future husband. Though most of her dates were supportive and understanding, Justin called her out for being dishonest during her marriage. Over dinner and drinks, he constantly questioned her choices and criticized saying that nobody would be able to trust her. He left the date in between, and all this conundrum made Gurki extremely emotional and disturbed. That could be the reason that she didn't choose anyone to go out on a second date. She might have needed some mental space to process everything.
Fast forward two years, we're happy to hear that she has moved on from that disastrous experience and found love with James. While talking to Oprah Magazine recently, the Indian beauty revealed the beginning of her love story and said, "If it hadn't been for the bad Justin date, (James) and I would have probably never become close in the first place. After the date, I was upset and crying. He came up to me and gave me a hug and checked on me on Instagram afterward. That's how he and I started talking." The 38-year-old uploaded a romantic picture with her beau on her I.G. account, check it out:

Interestingly, when we see her walking on the New York street looking for a possible match, she looks back and smiles at a well-dressed man. Well, that man was played by none other than her current boyfriend, James. Nicely played, production! Gurki seems to be in a happy place and wishes to take things forward. She said, "We love each other. We care about each other. We adore each other. I've always said I would get married again if it was the right person." Before this announcement, she uploaded a picture of her co-star, Luke Hawksworth, and many fans speculated if she's dating him. It turns out, he is just her one of her closest friends in New York.
The 42-year-old director comes across as a highly creative person - check out his IG grid for the proof! James is an Emmy Award-winning producer and Peabody Award-winning cinematographer. Right now, he is working on a Quibi show with Lena Waithe. He is also a very doting father to his 10-year-old son from his previous marriage. Gurki informs that after being quarantined together in March, she's planning to move in with him permanently. Her boyfriend is being creative in turning his L.A. apartment's garage into an art studio for her.

Gurki Basra appeared on Season 1 of Netflix’s Dating Around and she was the only person on the show to chose to not go on a second date with any of the five men she went out with.
On Sunday, she took to Instagram to joke about not picking a second date after Season 2 of the show was released to Netflix on Friday.
“Who said I didn’t pick a second date,” she captioned a photo of herself and boyfriend James Adolphus, who is the series’ director and cinematographer.
A post shared by Gurki Basra (@gurkibasra) on Jun 14, 2020 at 10:06pm PDT.
She also opened up about her relationship in an interview with Oprah magazine on Wednesday.
Basra said her tense date with Justin, who said he could never trust her because she’s been divorced, helped bring her and Adolphus together.
“If it hadn’t been for the bad Justin date, (James) and I would have probably never become close in the first place,” Basra told the outlet.
“After the date, I was upset and crying. He came up to me and gave me a hug, and checked on me on Instagram afterwards. That’s how he and I started talking,” she revealed.
Although Basra had five dates to go on for the show, she said she was immediately drawn to Adolphus but they kept their relationship professional at the time.
“Towards the end of filming, when I realized things weren’t gonna work out with any of the guys, I was definitely a bit more flirty. He would not have it.”
Adolphus appeared in Basra’s episode at the end when she chose to go on a second date with herself instead. He turned around and looked at her as she was walking down the street.
“I didn’t actually know he was going to be in that scene. The smile is genuine, and me smiling and being surprised is genuine,” Basra said.

DATING AROUND IS AVAILABLE TO WATCH NOW ON NETFLIX.
Gurki Basra From Dating Around Found Love With the Netflix Show's Director.
And she thanks that disastrous date with Justin for her new relationship.
Gurki Basra appeared on the first season of Dating Around , and went on a notoriously bad date. Two years later, the 38-year-old found love with Dating Around 's director, James Adolphus. In an exclusive interview with OprahMag.com, Basra opens up about how Dating Around changed her life.
The second season of Dating Around premiered on Netflix last week, giving viewers a portal into pre-pandemic dating rituals. On the glossy reality show, a diverse set of six New Orleans singles go on a series of dates, jumping from bar to table, and from laughter to awkward silence and back again.
But for one Dating Around contestant, the real romance happened off-camera. Gurki Basra appeared on the show's New York set during the first season, and became a fan favorite for how she handled a tense date with a cruel, clean-cut bro who questioned her divorce, and criticized her parents' arranged marriage.
Today, Basra credits that date from hell with leading to her current relationship—with none other than Dating Around 's director, James Adolphus.
"If it hadn't been for the bad Justin date, [James] and I would have probably never become close in the first place," Basra tells OprahMag.com, explaining that they had maintained professional boundaries before the incident. "After the date, I was upset and crying. He came up to me and gave me a hug, and checked on me on Instagram afterwards. That's how he and I started talking."
Adolphus is an Emmy and Peabody award-winning cinematographer, father to a 10-year-old boy, and, if you ask Basra, "amazingly brilliant, uber passionate," and “really freakin’ cute.” Currently, Adolphus is working on a Quibi show with Lena Waithe —and making room for Basra in his L.A. apartment. "He wants to turn the garage into an art studio for me," Basra says.
The final moment of Basra's Dating Around episode contains a prelude to the couple's future. Unlike other contestants, Basra chooses not to go on a second date with any of the five men. Walking down a SoHo street in a Sex and the City -inspired sequence, Basra cemented her image as the patron saint of empowered single women.
At one point, Basra turns around and smiles at a well-dressed man. Clearly, he's meant to symbolize the many possibilities Basra’s life in New York holds. But the moment has another, more literal significance—because that smiling gent is Adolphus.
"I didn't actually know he was going to be in that scene. The smile is genuine, and me smiling and being surprised is genuine," Basra says. The moment crackles with potential, with New York Times reporter Amanda Hess noting on Twitter, "I ship Gurki and this guy now."
Leading up to filming Dating Around ’s final sequence, Basra says their on-set chemistry was real—though not acted upon. A jewelry buyer, Basra remembers being struck by Adolphus's nose ring and earring holes when he first introduced himself. She admired that even when the New York summer revved up to 100 degrees, he still wore a dress shirt and fitted jeans. Essentially, she had five guys to date–but her eyes were on him.
"Towards the end of filming, when I realized things weren't gonna work out with any of the guys, I was definitely a bit more flirty. He would not have it. But in hindsight, he talks about how he'd go home and was like, 'Oh yeah, she's totally into me, but I can't do anything," Basra recalls.
After Dating Around wrapped, Adolphus and Basra went out for dinner, during which Basra joked he had the unfair advantage. He'd already heard her unspool her life story—from moving to the U.S. from India at age 12, to her marriage and divorce—on five other first dates.
By the time Dating Around premiered in February 2019, Adolphus and Basra were back to living on opposite coasts, but keeping in touch. Adolphus witnessed the drastic impact Dating Around had on her life. Overnight, she went from having a relatively quiet existence to being someone people stopped on the street and thanked. “He knows who I was before Dating Around . It helped us form a kinship quickly,” Basra says.
It was only when Basra moved to Los Angeles in the summer of 2019 that their relationship became serious. After quarantining together in March, they decided to make the situation permanent, and move in together. “We need to be each other's release, right? Like life is hard, trying to stay sane in this crazy time. We just want to be a refuge for one another,” Basra says.
Basra says she’s incredibly happy. “We love each other. We care about each other. We adore each other,” she exclaims, adding that it’s the most serious relationship she’s been in since her ex-husband. “I've always said I would get married again, if it was the right person,” Basra adds (and says her mother is already asking about their wedding).

'Dating Around's Gurki Basra Found Her Match With the Show's Director.
Netflix’s latest reality show sensation is Dating Around , the streaming service’s first foray into the dating show sub-genre. While it’s not as irreverent as Nailed It! or as peaceful as Tidying Up , the show fits in with Netflix’s unique take on reality formats. This dating show is patient with a cinematic flair that makes the kind of basic small talk you do on first dates way more riveting than you’d expect. The dates generally go well, with some going better than others but none really crashing in flames–except for Gurki and Justin.
Episode 2 follows an independent jewelry buyer named Gurki as she goes on five blind dates with five guys all at the same restaurant/bar (across different nights–this isn’t a Mrs. Doubtfire -style five-places-at-once thing). One of those guys is Justin, a guy who works in real estate, loves Miller High Life, hates cats, and dreams of rocking the stage (even though he can’t play guitar). Everything seems to be going along just fine as the small talk unfolds… and then the topic of marriage comes up.
Gurki talks about how her parents, who are from North India, had an arranged marriage. She then explains how that affected her first marriage, which was to a man she knew wasn’t the one but felt a whole lot of cultural pressure to get hitched. As she tells Justin, her parents made it work with their arranged marriage, so she could make it work with this guy she actually chose to be with.
This all makes sense to the other guys in the episode. One even commends her for coming out and saying that what she did to her ex-husband was wrong. But Justin can’t let it go. When they get to the final location of the night, a maybe tipsy Justin brings up Gurki’s divorce again and her marrying a guy she knew wasn’t the one. He doesn’t hold back: “How would anyone ever trust you?” Just putting this out there: that’s one sentence you never want to say on a first date. Gurki tries once again to explain to Justin that he doesn’t actually know what it feels like to come from her culture, and he accuses her of being defensive. He then gives up and leaves, and Gurki’s glad to see him go.
Where is Gurki from Dating Around now?
As we detailed in our update on all the couples from Dating Around Season 1, Gurki seems to be doing just fine. You can follow her on Instagram.
Where is Justin from Dating Around now?
This one’s a bit of a mystery, if only because his Instagram is private. Yep, Justin from Dating Around is on Instagram, but you’re not going to get an update on what he’s up to there. Whether or not his Insta was private before Dating Around dropped, who knows! It’s rumored that Netflix is planning an update on Season 1, so maybe we’ll find out more about Justin there. Or y’know, maybe he’s already had enough. If this episode was my 15 minutes of fame, I’d probably chuck that stopwatch in the Hudson.
