Data Extraction from Source Systems of SAP

When data is stored in SAP source systems mainly in downstream repositories, SAP data extraction, a feature in SAP, is used to recover data from the targeted systems. Additionally, there are many generic extractors for SAP data extraction from the source systems to be transferred to the SAP Business Warehouse. The process is automated and the extractors will know about which data has to be extracted and which are the tables from which data has to be read only after the Data Source is manned by generic extractor.

It is also possible to opt for generic SAP data extraction. It comprises master data attributes or texts, database views, transaction data from all transparent tables, and SAP query functional areas. The data at the Data Source for these types are generically read and transferred to the BW.

There are three main types of SAP data extraction.

The first is Content Extraction which is used to extract BW content, FI, HR, CO, SAP CRM, and LO cockpit. The second is Customer-Generated Extraction. This is used for LIS, FI-SL, CO-PA. Thirdly comes Generic Extraction that is based on DB View, Infoset, Function Modules.

Several extractors that are specific to certain applications and hard-coded for the Data Source are delivered with BI Content in SAP data extraction. These extractors precisely match the Data Source structure. Other forms of extractors can be used for extracting and moving data from SAP into BW.

A user can undertake SAP data extraction with an SAP Extractor. However, it should include master data attributes or texts, transaction data from all transparent tables, database views, or SAP query functional areas regardless of the application used. SAP data can also be directly exported to Excel by clicking on the exporting icon and selecting the relevant spreadsheet button.
