What is Play Therapy?
The sessions with your child will run for approximately 30-45 minutes per session depending on the age of your child. There may be times that your childās session is longer or shorter than this time. The session will always be conducted in a very professional manner although the session may at times appear unstructured and social.
Ā You will not be present during your child's individual play therapy sessions however are required to remain available for the duration of your child's session unless otherwise discussed with me. Your child will need you to be available after their session.Ā Ā
Generally, in the first three sessions, the focus will be development of the relationship with your child where your child will explore the playroom and development of the therapeutic relationship. After the fourth session, it is recommended that a parent update session be arranged to discuss your childās progress.
Ā Dependent on the needs of your child 8 -12 sessions may all that is required to achieve your childās goals, or it may take longer. As the child's parent you can decided the number of sessions you would like your child to attend. However, I do recommend a closure or termination session. This will assist your child with the predictability aspect of the sessions and an opportunity to complete any unfinished business they may have in the playroom. Sessions will be conducted once per week or as agreed to on initial consultation.
Imaginative Play
My primary focus will be imaginative play, where the child immerses themselves in Pretend Play. They will rely on their imagination to assist them with making sense of their world and finding positive pathways through trauma.Ā
