Darrell Hulsey

Entrepreneur and Leader in Healthcare Management

G. Darrell Hulsey has built a career spanning over 35 years in the healthcare management industry, where he has worked as both an entrepreneur and executive leader. Since 2016, he has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Professional Billing, Inc. (PBI). This company provides revenue cycle management and practice management services to physician practices in more than 15 states. In this role, he oversees a network of more than 200 practices. Alongside his professional journey, he has also committed over three decades to philanthropy, supporting charitable organizations with both his time and resources.

An Accomplished Career

His professional path began in 1991 when he joined CompMed/Medaphis Physician Services, now McKesson, as a Senior Operations Manager. While working in Knoxville, Tennessee, Darrell Hulsey managed the operations of hospital-based physician practices across four states. His responsibilities also included negotiating reimbursement and contractual terms with third-party payors and developing new business opportunities in multiple states.

After three years, he co-founded Medical Management Professionals (MMP) along with six other partners. During his tenure at the company, Darrell held various leadership roles and contributed to its rapid growth. In 1998, MMP was acquired by CBIZ, a public company, where he advanced to Vice President and later served as President and Chief Executive Officer. In 2013, when MMP returned to private ownership, he remained in leadership until he joined PBI as CEO in 2016.

During his time at MMP, the organization processed over 34 million procedures, handled $5 billion in client charges, and collected more than $2 billion in revenues for its clients. These results translated into $165 million in topline revenue and $21 million in earnings, as separately reported in CBIZ’s SEC filings.

Notable Achievements with MMP

As an Owner, Partner, and Executive Vice President, he guided MMP’s expansion into new states and specialties while also managing operations, sales, IT, HR, compliance, finance, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate governance. His leadership helped build expertise in new specialties and expanded the company’s footprint into additional markets.

From 2007 to 2013, while serving as President and CEO, he increased revenues from approximately $90 million to $165 million. Hulsey oversaw operations, financial management, accounting, sales, mergers and acquisitions, IT, compliance, HR, practice management, and marketing. He personally recruited the Executive Team, who reported directly to him.

Working closely with the COO, CTO, and operations leaders, he led an effort to migrate 12 separate practice management and billing systems into four primary systems over three to four years. This transition reduced the workforce by about 35% and lowered operating costs by more than 45%.

In his earlier role as Executive Vice President of Operations for the East Region, he managed physician practices that ranged in size from four to over 100 providers, covering radiology, anesthesiology, pathology, and emergency medicine. He helped grow revenues in this region by 83% and profits by 98% over five years, while also generating more than $30 million in new company revenues. Darrell expanded MMP’s Eastern operations from two states to 10 in less than two years and consistently maintained pre-tax profit margins of 25% to 30%.

Additionally, he served as Chief Compliance Officer for four years, during which he developed and implemented the company’s third-party compliance program.

CEO of Professional Billing, Inc.

Since assuming the role of CEO at PBI in 2016, he has led the company through a period of significant growth and modernization. Under his leadership, PBI increased topline revenue by 250% between 2016 and 2025. This growth was achieved through expansion, efficiency improvements, and the introduction of tailored services for physician practices. Hulsey also managed the acquisition and integration of five organizations, realizing 30% cost synergies within 18 months of each.

His responsibilities at PBI include overseeing finance, accounting, sales, compliance, HR, and marketing. He introduced advanced data analytics platforms that optimized revenue cycle processes, reduced claim denials by 25%, and improved collections by 15% year over year. He also drove the company’s digital transformation, implementing AI-based billing systems and cloud-based practice management tools. These changes reduced administrative overhead by 40% and improved overall client satisfaction.

He has also built compliance frameworks in line with HIPAA and CMS regulations, ensuring strong audit results and reducing operational risks.

Philanthropy

For more than 35 years, he has been actively involved in charitable giving and volunteer work. He has consistently supported religious charities, often dedicating time and financial contributions. For over 20 years, he has supported St. Jude’s Hospital and has been a regular contributor to the Epilepsy Foundation of America.

As a graduate of the University of Alabama, he has shown ongoing support to his alma mater through contributions for more than 30 years.

Academic Experience

Darrell earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Health Management with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Alabama in 1991.

He was born in Haleyville, Alabama, and maintains a connection to his roots. When away from his professional responsibilities, he enjoys fishing, hiking, hunting, and traveling.
