DarkScreen Privacy Policy
DarkScreen has no accounts and does not collect your name, email address, location, or usage analytics. The dark overlay itself works entirely on your device. The app contacts its own server only to protect the free trial and to verify the one-time purchase, as described below.
To prevent the 7-day free trial from being restarted by uninstalling and reinstalling the app, DarkScreen derives an identifier from your device’s Android ID using a one-way SHA-256 hash. The original Android ID is never sent. The hashed identifier is stored on the server together with the date the free trial started.
If you buy the one-time unlock, the purchase token issued by Google Play is sent to the server, which checks it with Google. The stored purchase verification data consists of a one-way hash of the token, the Google Play order ID, the purchase time, and the purchase status: purchased or refunded.
The app has no analytics SDKs, no advertising IDs, and no tracking of any kind. The data described above is used only to protect the free trial and verify purchases. It is not sold, shared for advertising, or combined with any other data.
Under the GDPR, the legal bases are our legitimate interest in preventing abuse of the free trial and verifying purchases, pursuant to Article 6(1)(f), and the performance of the purchase contract, pursuant to Article 6(1)(b).
The server runs on Google Firebase, using Cloud Functions and Firestore, in the EU region of Frankfurt. Trial and purchase records are kept for as long as the app is offered, because deleting these records would allow the trial to be restarted.
To request information or deletion, contact us. If you purchased the one-time unlock, include your Google Play order ID so we can find your record. You cannot look up your device’s trial record yourself because it contains only a one-way hash.
When the app contacts the server, Google Cloud automatically records technical access logs, including the IP address, the time of the request, and device or app version information. These logs are used only to operate and secure the service and are deleted automatically after 30 days.
Display over other apps
This permission is required to show the dark overlay window on top of whichever app you are using. It is used solely to render the overlay. No content from other apps is read, recorded, or transmitted.
Internet access
Internet access is used to process the one-time in-app purchase through Google Play Billing and to exchange the trial and purchase data described above with the server. The app also uses Google’s Play Integrity check through Firebase App Check so that the server only responds to genuine copies of the app installed through Google Play.
No. The core functionality, including the dark overlay, window settings, and brightness control, works completely offline. If the server cannot be reached, the app keeps working with its locally stored trial state.
No data is shared for advertising or sold. The third-party services involved are Google Play, which processes the one-time purchase under its own privacy policy, and Google Firebase, which hosts the server as a data processor.
Your window size, position, and brightness preferences are stored locally on your device only, using Android’s standard app storage. This data never leaves your device and is deleted automatically if you uninstall the app.
DarkScreen does not knowingly collect personal information from children. The only data it stores is the hashed device identifier and purchase data described above.
