Onward is written and directed by Dan Scanlon and features the voices of Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer. Set in a modern-day fantasy world, magic is suddenly thrusted into the lives of two teenage elves, who embark on a quest to spend one more day with their father who has passed away. 

I believe the reviews for this movie are honestly being just a little bit too harsh, this movie is so much better than people are giving it credit for! It’s one of Pixar’s most creative movies in years, alongside Coco. It also features stellar storytelling and voice-work. The comedy manages to be hilarious while not taking away from any of the dramatic tone. It even manages to take clich́ed movie tropes and turn them on their head and put a new twist on them.  

Tom Holland and Chris Pratt do a fantastic job with their voice-acting. It’s really easy to get the sense that these two are amazing friends in real life and genuinely have a deep emotional connection to one another. Their brotherhood in the movie is naturally beautiful and it leaves you emotionally satisfied by the end.

If this movie proves one thing, it’s that Pixar will never lose it’s touch when it comes to making animated movies. Onward is a well written, visually stunning, beautifully directed movie. As per usual, the animation is also top notch. Since Onward is available on Disney+, I highly recommend it. Another home-run for Pixar once again.
