To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Rachel, an MLIS graduate from SJSU, and I am passionate about making library collections, instruction and services accessible, equitable, and integrated into the communities libraries serve. Specific areas of interest include: reference, information literacy, user experience, outreach, project management and assistive technology.
In terms of experience, I have served as the Chair of the ALASC at SJSU and elected Secretary for the Special Library Association Southern California Chapter, developing leadership, outreach, and project management skills. As a graduate assistant to Dr. David Loertscher for the last two years, I facilitated Zoom workshops for his Instructional Design and Collection Management graduate classes, provided technical support, and assisted in editing instructional materials on Canvas and Google sites. I have also taught group classes and conducted one-on-one information and digital literacy instruction sessions for the last two years. Additionally, I interned with the National Park Golden Gate Recreation Museum Archive Program for the Summer of 2022, and the Orange County Public Library assisting with holds, shelving, programing and shadowing the adult service librarian. I also completed an internship with the Golden West College Library Instruction Services Outreach Librarian. In Spring 2023 I finished a rewarding internship with California State University Pollak Library Reference department, where I conducted daily reference interviews and research assistance to students and faculty.
My skill set encompasses the integration of technology and art, utilizing tools such as: Mozilla HUBS, 3D Printing, ProCreate, Photoshop, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Excel, Adobe Creative Suite, OCLC, HTML5, JavaScript, graphic design, research writing, Canvas, Springshare, LibGuides, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and online facilitation and mediation. I have also run my own fine art online business, managing my own website content and discovering new ways to connect with stakeholders. With a BA in Psychology and Art, I bring a holistic approach to library services, incorporating reference, art, community, and a commitment to equitable lifelong learning. Along with teaching information literacy and reference in person, I enjoy creating asynchronous online instruction materials that are accessible in a variety of formats for greatest use. I believe it is essential to engage students through various formats and walk side by side with them throughout their learning journey.
Over the years, I have developed a well-rounded perspective and a passion for community projects. Starting as a library page in Colorado, I have since taught art workshops, digital literacy and technology instruction, and led mural projects in my local community. In my time at SJSU I was a project manager for multiple symposiums and online events, along with chairing outreach projects with advertising and engagement criteria. With eighteen years of customer service experience, I have honed my communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills. I excel in collaborative team projects and possess strong time management and presentation abilities. My recent internship at CSUF's reference desk further solidified my suitability and passion as a reference and instruction librarian, equipping me with the necessary skills to engage students through various formats in the post-pandemic era.
I am eager to contribute to your organization and would love to be a part of your team. Thank you for considering my application, and I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Rachel Fleming
