Current supply of onion of the country comes majority from local production, about 75.21% while the remaining 24.79% comes from imports. Onions are presently utilized mainly as food, about 90%, 1% for seeds, less than 1% as exports while the remaining 9% as feeds and waste.
The country’s top five onion producing regions are Central Luzon, Ilocos Region, MIMAROPA Region, Cagayan Valley and Western Visayas which are technically are the only onion producing regions having already contributed 100% share to total production. Of these onion suppliers of the country, only the top three regions are self-sufficient, with the rest dependent on the supply from Central Luzon, Ilocos and MIMAROPA regions or from imports.
In terms of demand, the top five onion consuming regions are CALABARZON, NCR, Bicol Region and SOCCSKSARGEN which are the prospect markets for the onion production of MIMAROPA. And three of them are strategically located within its reach, CALABARZON, NCR and Bicol Regions. These are opportunities which the MIMAROPA onion farmers can take advantage of as these regions have no existing area and or have no favorable weather condition to produce onion locally.
