History. Knowledge of the past helps you understand your own time and create your identity. Maybe you are interested in getting information about where your family comes from or where the place where you live got its name or what the old building on the corner was originally used for. To get an in-depth answer to this, it is necessary to know something about past times, about history.
History is not only about wars, revolutions or dramatic upheavals, but also about what surrounds us in everyday life and curiosity is the best starting point. The story gives you a connection between past, present and future. We can learn from what man has done before us, but also provide knowledge in new areas as well as an aesthetic experience. When working with history, one must examine the traces of those who have lived before us. They can tell about parts of a reality before our own time, but never give a complete picture of the past. Many different types of research help to create knowledge about human activity, but the most important are archeology, paleontology and of course history research. They systematize and interpret finds from the past and thus give us a picture of history. While archaeologists primarily work with concrete objects and remnants of human activity, the written sources are crucial to historical research. In the early stages of Danish history, the written sources are very limited, but throughout history the material grows, and today there are often large amounts of sources.
Therefore, the historian must choose and delimit his material, ie decide which sources should be included in a text. The choice depends on what the historian wants to know about the past, and therefore it is important for the historian to work with delimited topics that can illuminate what has actually happened. The time in which the historian lives can determine which source he or she emphasizes and what the purpose of a study or text is. Historians are not neutral in their choices, and this allows for different interpretations of the same event. That is why analysis of sources is such an important factor in understanding history.
The aim of this website is to contribute with delimited topics in perspective to the broad Danish history. The material on the pages can be used as general information about Danish History, but also as part of a teaching course.
