Principal UI Designer: HTC & VRChat
ROLE: Steered strategy, research, industry evangelism and outreach
TEAM: 1 UI Designer/Strategist (me), 1 User Researcher, 1 Concept Artist
TOOLS: Tvori, VRChat
IMPACT: Findings were rolled into XR Association Primer for public distribution to XR developers
I proposed a suite of positive interventions to curb toxic behavior in social VR. These included a focus on priming, empowerment, collective action, intent capture, and world segregation. These thought experiments were all made in Tvori.
Groups are rewarded for communicating their intent and norms to newcomers
This feature allows a group of human participants in a synchronous social VR application to easily communicate their intent and activity to other participants in the same virtual space. The explicit display of goal of a group serves to set expectations for other participants as to the kinds of behaviors that the group will engage in and signals the degree to which other participants may want to interact with the group, creating a more harmonious online environment.Summon friends to the current locale
The presence of other avatars, piloted by friends, serves to calm the participant, signal to other participants that all actions will be watched, and to create a safer online environment. Friends who respond will be rewarded with social capital and other in-app incentives.Temporarily grant special powers to enhance confidence
A participant who is in a bad mood, is granted enhanced capabilities. Giving boosted digital skills, preferential access, or increased social capital gives them an enhanced sense of confidence and positivity. This serves to decrease the likelihood of the participant acting negatively to other participants.Curated social activities to encourage meeting people
Lightweight activities require multiple participants to engage at the same time. Strangers can get to know each other through solving puzzles and enriching the environment.Users can leave clues and artifacts to be found by future participants
Persistent asynchronous and synchronous engagement with the environment is encouraged through personalization of the world.Over the past year I started crafting a framework for designing ethical AR. These are not guidelines or rules but instead, are a way of thinking about design decisions that are informed by my belief that we can make this a better world if we increase human connection and amplify mindfulness through compassion, curiosity, and clarity of purpose. You can get a flavor of my thinking from my recent public speaking on these topics or this short post.
