In order to keep students active in their individual progress and their class progress they need to have access to the tools I use to monitor their work. Data is such an important tool to keeping myself and my students informed of how we are meeting our goals and what areas we may need to revisit. By using the class Data Board and Mastery Connect reports I am able to track progress in real time and give students a visual display of how they are growing throughout the year.
This board is displayed in the classroom and shows students the mastery level for their class based on previous assessments. The green represents mastery, the yellow is near mastery, and the red is remediation. Students are able to see how they are progressing as a class in the standards we have covered and it reminds them of where, as a class, they may need to revisit content. Keeping progress visible keeps me accountable for updating my classes and encourages friendly competition among my classes to out perform one another.
Students are assessed in a varying number of ways and Mastery Connect is a great online platform that allows me to track individual student data, trends within classrooms, and assess individual questions from assessments. Data in Mastery Connect is divided into North Carolina essential standards which makes entering data into student trackers much more simple.
In this program I am able to create an assessment and push it through to the student portal where they will either fill in multiple choice answers, drag and drop their answers, or complete a matching activity. This platform is great for Do Now and Exit Tickets and bi-weekly tests because I can see student reports instantly and use the results to adjust my instruction. If there is a question on a test that the majority of my students missed, I can then go back to the question and revisit the concept with the classes to avoid future misconceptions.
