Daniel's Bio:
Daniel Lamar Grant-King is a lifelong advocate, educator, organizer, and public servant dedicated to building a North Carolina where every family has the opportunity to thrive. A Democrat committed to economic justice, educational equity, affordable housing, healthcare access, and civil rights, Daniel believes government should work for working people—not just the wealthy and well-connected.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in a family rooted in faith, service, and community leadership, Daniel is the youngest of five children born to Pearley Ervin King Sr. and Maxine Gwendolyn Mottley Grant-King. His family's values of hard work, compassion, and public service helped shape his lifelong commitment to advocating for those whose voices are too often ignored.
Today, Daniel proudly calls Raleigh, North Carolina home for twenty two years and has spent more than twenty years serving communities through public education, civic engagement, grassroots organizing, and public policy advocacy.
As a Special Education Teacher, Daniel has dedicated his career to helping students succeed regardless of their background, disability, income, or zip code. Every day, he works alongside students, families, and educators to ensure children receive the resources, support, and opportunities they deserve.
His experience inside North Carolina's public schools has given him firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing students, teachers, and parents. Daniel has witnessed the consequences of underfunded classrooms, staffing shortages, and inadequate investments in public education. These experiences fuel his determination to fight for increased teacher pay, expanded special education services, universal school support programs, and stronger investments in public schools.
Daniel believes every child deserves access to a world-class public education and that educators should be respected, supported, and fairly compensated for the vital work they perform.
As a member of the Raleigh Fair Housing Advisory Board and an active advocate with tenant organizations across North Carolina, Daniel has been a strong voice for fair housing policies and tenant protections.
He understands that affordable housing is one of the most urgent issues facing North Carolina families. Rising rents, housing instability, displacement, and homelessness have created challenges for working families, seniors, veterans, and young people throughout the state.
Daniel believes safe, affordable housing is a human right. In the General Assembly, he will fight to expand affordable housing investments, strengthen tenant protections, prevent housing discrimination, increase homelessness prevention resources, and support policies that help families achieve long-term housing stability.
Daniel's commitment to public service extends beyond advocacy and education. As an Organizer with the North Carolina A. Philip Randolph Institute, he helped engage voters, strengthen community partnerships, and mobilize residents around issues impacting working families.
His organizing work has focused on increasing civic participation, protecting voting rights, expanding economic opportunities, and empowering communities that have historically been overlooked in the political process.
Daniel believes democracy is strongest when everyone participates. He has spent years building coalitions, recruiting volunteers, engaging voters, and creating opportunities for community members to become active participants in shaping public policy.
Daniel is no stranger to public service and leadership.
He previously served as the Democratic nominee for Raleigh City Council District C in 2024 and as a Democratic candidate for the Wake County Board of Education in 2022. Through these campaigns, he traveled across communities listening to residents, understanding their concerns, and advocating for practical solutions that improve people's lives.
His leadership includes service as:
• Member, Raleigh Fair Housing Advisory Board
• Chairman, North Carolina Educational Advocacy Committee
• Former Board Member, North Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers (NCPTA)
• Former Ranking Member, Wake County Public School System Committee on Instructional Calendars
• Former 2nd Vice President, Wake County Teacher Assistant Association
• Advocate with the North Carolina Tenants Union and Triangle Tenants Union
• Advocate with the North Carolina Democratic Socialists of America
• Young Democrats of North Carolina Member
• Wake County Young Dems of North Carolina Member
These experiences have prepared Daniel to be an effective legislator who understands how to bring people together, solve problems, and deliver results.
