RESEARCH PROGRAM
The integration of system dynamics models, image processing, numerical optimization and machine learning techniques appears very promising for an effective management of the food supply chain and sustainable agriculture. According with the Italian National Research Program for the period 2021-2027, a fully-funded three-year PhD position is available in the PhD Program in Mathematics and Applications, under the supervision of Prof. Daniela di Serafino (Dept. Mathematics and Applications), in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural Sciences.
Objectives of the research program:
development of numerical algorithms exploiting optimization, image analysis and machine learning to identify, from space and time data, some indicators of the state of agricultural systems;
development of mathematical models for the description of the interaction dynamics of soil, water, crops and pests;
numerical simulation and optimization of the previous models, for minimizing the use of pesticides and improve the water resources management.
The program includes strong interaction with a System Engineering SME involved in several innovation projects, comprising a project for the development of an automated system for smart farms and sustainable agriculture.
