Diversity offers ample opportunity for growth, and college classrooms overflow with various nationalities, ages, life experiences, and unique personal identities. Complex pedagogical theory is limited in scope, whereas personal experience and application provide the best learning experience. Cultivating best practices for diverse classrooms is a perpetual process, requiring an eager pursuit of scholarship and a humbleness to recognize that we must continue to challenge ourselves. As such, I strive to scaffold my students in developing deep conceptual understanding of the material as well as building their confidence in their own abilities. Sadly, teaching mathematics often requires deconstructing a student's fixed mindset and their preconceived notions of ability. I have no doubt that given a rich and conducive environment, any student can improve their mathematical skill set.
More and more, STEM classrooms are encountering outside social and political issues. I have experienced this first-hand. Thus, I feel a great sense of responsibility to ensure that first-generation students have the resources to succeed, to make sure underrepresented students feel that they belong, and to challenge the brightest students to further develop their skill sets. I am committed to treating every student with the dignity they deserve because I strongly believe they are all made in the image of God. As such, I will continue to do my best not only to make students feel valued but to know their value.
