ABOUT ME
Welcome. Since 2020, I have been Director of Medical Professionalism, Ethics, & Humanities at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine. I currently serve as an Associate Professor and as Interim Chair of the newly-created Department of Medical Education & Scholarship. In these roles, I teach medical humanities, medical ethics, issues of professionalism in medicine, medical jurisprudence, and epidemiology and biostatistics. I have an additional appointment as a Research Scientist at the Wilmington, DE VA Medical Center.
I earned my PhD in Healthcare Ethics from Duquesne University in 2017, received my MSc in Global Health and Infectious Diseases from The University of Edinburgh (Scotland), and also completed graduate degrees in theology and moral theology/philosophy (Master of Divinity and Master of Theology).
From 2017-2019 I was Clinical Assistant Professor at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
In 2016, I spent the year as a bioethics consultant to the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk.
Since 2011 I've served as a Chaplain in the US Air Force Reserve, currently holding the rank of Major, and am a 2023 graduate of the Air Command and Staff College.
My current academic interests are mainly in normative and empirical approaches to bioethics. I primarily work in research ethics, xenotransplantation, military medical ethics, novel tech and potential therapies, and the relationship between religion/spirituality and health. You can find my PubMed profile here and my Google Scholar page here. I co-edited this 2023 volume on the ethical, regulatory, and social aspects of xenotransplantation, and I co-authored this book on xenotransplantation ethics--Exploring the Ethics of Clinical Xenotransplantation (Christopher Bobier, Adam Omelianchuk, Daniel J. Hurst. Routledge, 2025). My research has been supported by Novo Nordisk and the British Academy.
One of the joys of academia is partnering with others on interesting research. So if you have a project you want to collaborate on, I'm all ears.
Outside academia, you can usually find me drinking black coffee, reading a good book, trying to fight back against the dad bod, and spending time with my wife and two active boys.
