Taken from his 1924 obituary (edited for clarity):
Daniel J. Chaffer was one of six children born to Abraham Chaffer and Sarah Huxtable, who came to Deer Creek, Ill., many years ago, from England.
He was born at Deer Creek on September 11, 1848, and died at the Methodist hospital, Peoria, March 13, 1924, at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 2 days.
On March 13, 1871, he was married to Rebecca H. Robinson of Goodfield, Ill.
Mr. Chaffer attended the Presbyterian church from the time he moved to Washington 50 years ago.
He served this community for many years in a public way—as supervisor, Alderman, and three terms as mayor of the city. He was respected for his staunch, upright character, and his word was as good as his bond.
