Spotify is expanding its AI Playlist feature, which creates customized playlists based on user text descriptions, to additional English-speaking regions. Starting today, Premium subscribers in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand can access the feature in beta. This follows its initial launch in the UK and Australia earlier this year. The AI Playlist is available to Spotify Premium users.
In 2019, Spotify made a $100 million investment in podcasting, securing exclusive deals with high-profile celebrities and acquiring companies like Parcast, The Ringer, Gimlet, and Anchor. These acquisitions will now be consolidated under the Spotify for Podcasters brand. Despite recent layoffs affecting its podcast team, Spotify is doubling down on podcasting by focusing on video podcasts and signing big names like comedian Hasan Minhaj and gaming YouTuber Markiplier
In 2023, Spotify employed an average of 9,123 people worldwide, up from 8,359 in the previous year. This marks a dramatic increase from the 311 workers employed by the company in 2011, however; Spotify made headlines in 2022 and 2023 for letting go a large share of their employees.
Starting out as a Sweden-based startup, Spotify has evolved into a strong player in the digital content subscription market. The music streaming service was publicly launched in 2008 and has gone on to become a company with more than 5.25 billion euros in annual revenue. Spotify legally provides content from record labels including EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner Music Group. The basic version of the service is free and higher tiers of paid subscription feature no ads and access on mobile devices. Although available as a stand-alone service, Spotify made its U.S. debut in July 2011 as a Facebook application and has since included heavily integrated social features like shared tracks and messaging between users. As of September 2015, more than 39 million users were accessing Spotify via the social network. The streaming service currently has more than 20 million paying subscribers, up from 10 million in May 2014. As of February 2015, Spotify ranks as one of the most popular audio apps downloaded by U.S. smartphone users .
Streaming media is currently undergoing a strong upwards trend with global digital music revenues amounted to 2.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2017. With the decline of physical music sales, the digital revenue of easily accessible streaming services is more important than ever.
Spotify holds 31.7% of the global music streaming market (2023), far ahead of Apple Music (12.6%) and Amazon Music (11.1%)
Spotify's total revenue has steadily increased over the years, with Premium subscriptions being the dominant source of income. The advertising revenue has grown but remains significantly smaller compared to subscriber earnings. The sharpest revenue increases occurred between 2015 and 2021, showing Spotify’s strong expansion in the music streaming industry.
