Whiteboard – booth title and direct call-to-action for passersby to engage
Feedback Box – includes three colors of sticky notes soliciting feedback (ideas, opportunities, insights, tea) on three topics.
Home Table – a physical structure comprising a counter-height surface and roof-like superstructure for the purpose of calling attention to the Booth location.
Website Board – whiteboard pointing visitors to this website for information about the Booth and its ongoing projects
Round 2: after 3 weeks with new prompts in place – "facilities," "academics," and "social & cultural" – 3 faculty/staff gathered to uncover what was shared; each person took a turn reading a random sticky note from the Opportunity Box aloud, then placed it onto a whiteboard (image carousel)
As the group added notes to the boards, groups emerged with apparent commonalities between notes and some proximity to current sticky note prompts (below):
Facilities – bathroom, perpetual (maintenance), space vibes
Academics – curricular, pedagogical
Social & Cultural – individual notes
Issues, suggestions and musings gathered during March's "What's in the Box" session are slowly but surely translating into action:
Restroom tiles broken: work scheduled for Spring 2024
Pull-down power cords broken: work scheduled for Summer 2024
Hayes lobby is too dark, furniture is bad: interior design competition will result in a lobby update over Summer 2024
Hayes lobby "Pod" use issues: D&B committee to prototype a "I'm waiting" alert system Spring 2024 as part of re-examining use policy for the Pod
Identified building & facilities theme! D&B committee has made maintenance requests where possible, will compose a report to share with building manager, solicit targeted feedback for facilities topics.
Identified academics theme! D&B committee will compose a report to share with Undergraduate Studies committee, solicit targeted feedback for academics topics.
Identified social & cultural theme! D&B committee will compose a report to maintain within D&B committee, solicit targeted feedback for social & cultural topics.
New box questions more focused on facilities, academics, and social & cultural topics.
New box opening session Friday, April 19th at noon in Hayes 105!

Curiosity about "what's in the box?" brought five students, three faculty and two staff gathered to Hayes Hall 105. After expressing their intentionality – what brought them to the gathering – each person took a turn reading a random sticky note from the Opportunity Box aloud, then placed it onto a whiteboard.
As the group added notes to the boards, groups emerged with apparent commonalities between notes. Two readily apparent groups were:
"building" related mostly to problems with Hayes Hall facilities
"academic" included problems and ideas around curricular activities
Project Board – features a "happenings" area with listed dates for time-based, synchronous events; also features a "projects" area where ongoing projects are named, the development phase is tracked, project leaders listed; an archive of questions-of-the-week occupies the bottom of the board as well.
Opportunity Box – includes three colors of sticky notes soliciting issues/complaints (orange), ideas/solutions (purple), and musings/thoughts (blue).
Home Table – a physical structure comprising a counter-height surface and roof-like superstructure for the purpose of calling attention to the D&B Booth location.
Welcome Board – whiteboard with welcome message, graphical Q&A about the D&B Booth; features a question-of-the-week that folks can answer by writing in marker or adding a sticky note.
After nearly 5 weeks of collecting responses and a round of in-class invitations for participation, we have a date and location planned for opening our Opportunity Box together with anyone who would like to join.
The majority of design foundations and design major students have class on the 2nd floor of Hayes Hall, not everyone passes through the lobby on the way up. So, today we moved our D&B Booth up to a hallway intersection on the 2nd floor to increase its visibility.
When it came time to set the priority for this academic year, the Diversity & Belonging (D&B) Committee saw a big opportunity to involve the folks ultimately impacted by the committee's work in the work – a chance for co-design.
But where to start? Committee members knew folks in our building – students, staff, faculty, visitors – not only had a stake in the D&B Committee's work, but also had perspective. They had ideas, had identified issues... but didn't have a great way of communicating their lived experiences or dreams for the future.
A priority emerged: we needed to put our effort into facilitating a dialogue, and not just a single conversation or survey, but a system which would invite equitable participation and ultimately lead to increased diversity and belonging.
The idea for our Feedback Booth (formerly "D&B Booth") as a malleable, physical place for dialogue was born, its first iteration implemented in late January, 2024 in the lobby of Hayes Hall.
This webpage serves as log of our Booth's evolution and impact. Organized in reverse chronological order, readers will find the booth's most recent happenings first.
