The dance was invented by slaves who were chained together in the sugar cane fields. They made the dance their own by quickening the tempo of the music and adjusting their dancing to suit their conditions. The Merengue has been compared to the "Cake Walk" dance of the American South, which also involves a limp or dragging one leg.
