Welcome to Dance Ability!
Dance-Ability at ECU is a welcoming, enjoyable environment for students with and without disabilities.
ECU Dance Ability is a student run organization formed around the idea that everyone is able to dance. Our vision is to create a positive and inclusive environment for kids of all abilities and backgrounds. We foster creative expression, promote self-confidence, and improve physical strength and balance through fun danced based activities.
ECU Dance Ability was started in 2009 by ECU staff member Dr. Boni Boswell. Dr. Boswell wanted to spread the joy of dancing to kids of all abilities. Dr. Boswell built up a successful foundation of the ECU Dance Ability program.
Currently, after 15 years on campus, ECU Dance Ability is an entirely student run organization. Student volunteers are most often majoring in recreational therapy, nursing, exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy or related fields.
ECU Dance Ability provides free dance classes to children of the community once a week. ECU Dance Ability works with kids of all abilities from ages 4 to 16 years old. Children are taught dances by student choreographers and paired with a volunteer buddy to keep them engaged in class. ECU Dance Ability also organizes and prepares the kids in the program for two family friendly dance recitals (winter and spring) each year.
