Dance Appreciation Syllabus 2022-2023

What is this class about?

Students will learn the history of dance as an art form and develop an understanding of the role of dance in various cultures. Students will study the influences of choreographers and dancers who have shaped the history of dance. In addition, this course will help students develop a dance vocabulary and the (performing arts) production process.

What to expect in this class:

• Learn principals, vocabulary, and history of various genres of dance.

• Study the purpose and roles of dance in cultures.

• View & critique live and pre-recorded dance performances.

• Research famous choreographers and dancers.

• Assist at PFMS Arts Department’s performances and productions.

• Explore other visual and performing art forms.

• Field trips!

What does Ms. McCray expect from me?

• Be respectful to everyone and everything.

• Always be prepared and on time.

• Participate fully every day and be willing to learn!

• Never eat in the facility. (No gum, food, candy, drinks) Water bottles are appropriate.

• Listen and follow directions the first time they are given.

• Cell phones and/or electronic devices must be put away in your book sac or given to me.

Failure to meet these requirements may result:

• Verbal Warning.

• Point(s) deduction.

• Parent Contact/Conference.

• Discipline Referral.

Grading

Students will receive frequent and diverse opportunities to demonstrate competency in the subject area. Students will take announced and unannounced quizzes, and will be expected to complete skills and performance test, writing and reading assignments - as well as special projects throughout the year

Generally, points are assessed as follows:

Tests/Quizzes

10 – 100 pts

Classwork/Homework assignments

5 – 20 pts

Mid-term/Final Exam

100 pts

Performances (all students must assist in at least one of PFMS’s performances or productions per year).

100 – 200 pts

Tests/Quizzes/Midterm Exam/Final Exam

Tests, quizzes, and exams must be made up within three days of an absence. Make an appointment with me on the day you return to class to make up quizzes and tests. Be sure to turn in your excuse to the office so you will be allowed to make up the work. If you are aware ahead of time of an upcoming absence, get assignment beforehand to avoid falling behind.

Classwork/Homework /Projects/Essays

Classwork, homework, projects, and essays must be turned in on time. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED unless you have an excused absence. As per student handbook. If you know you’re going to be absent on the one of these are due, turn it in early or send it with a fellow student or a parent.

Performance(s)

Dance is a performing art. Each student is required to assist and/or attend at least one PFMS Art Department’s (choir, band, dance) performance throughout the year. (More info TBA).

Field trips

We will have at least two fieldtrips throughout the year that are open to students with good behavior and a “B” or higher in the course. Field trips are optional. (More Info TBA)
