I'm a former farm worker. I spent my summer vacations in middle and high school picking crops. I've picked strawberrries and garlic. I was also an irrigator. Being a field worker meant I had mud on my hands and dust on my face. It meant working sun-up to sun-down.
I was always curious as a kid. I always wanted to know things first. And I always wanted to tell people what I knew. I never knew that would lead me into journalism. It started as a freshman in college, when a friend asked me to help out with the college radio station at San Jose State University. That's when I fell in love with the microphone. The university molded my instinctual curiosity into journalistc inquisitiveness. I'm proud to say that I eventually traded in my farm worker shovel, for the prestigious Emmy Award.
My wife, Monica, and I have three beautiful children: Malyna, Isela and Michael Damian. Our hope is they live their lives with kindness, respect, and a pride for their culture. We instill values in them aligned with what our parents instilled in us: humility, tradition, and a dedication to community service.
