Binky's Redemption
9 January 2026
Should you happen to venture near One Dalkeith's Cornershop Collective shop and take a wee peek through the window, you might just find a majestic steed staring back at you: Proud, resplendent and just a wee bit precocious, stands Binky the Rocking Horse.
We're currently inviting the people of Dalkeith to bid to give him a new home (Bidding closes in Easter) but how exactly did he come to end up in a shop window in Dalkeith?
Binky's humble beginnings (Size 9 shoe for scale!)
Binky started his journey to us via a short detour to Stobhill Recycling Centre, where he was headed to what was to be his final resting place - a large metal skip filled with wood waste. His story would have ended there if it hadn't been for the keen eye of friend of the shed, Lorna. After he caught her notice, she remarked that he was "far too nice to throw away". With barely a moments hesitation, Binky's former owner had placed him at her feet and headed back to the car. Leaving Lorna to wonder, "What am I going to do with this thing?"
After a quick phone call to the shed, he was soon on a bench in our workshop. Leaving us to wonder "what are we going to do with this thing?"
Here's looking at you, Bink! The vinyl stencil allows the shedder's to punch higher than their artistic weight class would normally allow
We stripped his varnish back to the wood, fashioned a new bridle and reigns and gave hime a striking white coat. After that we cut some stencils for his features using a Cricut and lastly, we gave him a name: Binky - named for the gleaming white stallion ridden by Death in the Discworld series (a firm favourite of at least two of our shedders).
It's been almost a year since Binky entered our workshop on that fateful day. He came to us nameless, scuffed, beaten and without expression. After a bit of time in the shed he's found a new lease of life. Standing proud, smiling at people from the shop window, waiting to find his new forever home.
Wherever he goes next we know one thing is for certain, coming into the shed greatly altered the trajectory of his life - just as it has for so many of our members.
