The Boston Celtics are facing more than just elimination in the Eastern Conference Semifinals—they’re dealing with the sudden loss of their superstar.

Six-time All-Star Jayson Tatum suffered a non-contact right leg injury late in Game 4 against the New York Knicks on Monday night, casting a shadow over what was shaping up to be one of his most memorable playoff performances.

With under three minutes remaining, Tatum lunged for a loose ball and immediately collapsed, clutching his right ankle in visible agony. As play continued, culminating in an OG Anunoby fastbreak dunk, the Celtics’ bench quickly called for medical assistance. Tatum was unable to put weight on his leg and had to be helped to the locker room—eventually seen in a wheelchair, his head buried in his hands.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla confirmed postgame that the extent of Tatum's injury remains unknown, but an MRI scheduled for Tuesday should provide answers.

“He’s the type of guy that always bounces right back up. So when he didn’t, we knew it was serious,” Mazzulla said. “It’s tough to see someone like him go down like that.”

Tatum had been sensational before the injury, racking up 42 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals—connecting on seven shots from beyond the arc. His fifth career 40-point playoff game ties Celtics legends Larry Bird and John Havlicek for the most in franchise history.

Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau, who witnessed the injury firsthand, expressed his concern after the game. “I never want to see a player get hurt. Jayson’s a great player and a great person. I hope it’s nothing serious.”

Boston ultimately lost Game 4, 121-113, falling into a daunting 3-1 series hole. Game 5 is set for Wednesday night at TD Garden, where the Celtics must win to keep their season alive—possibly without their leading scorer.

Tatum’s availability remains uncertain, but his absence would dramatically alter Boston’s playoff hopes. With the defending champs now on the ropes, all eyes are on Tuesday’s MRI—and whether Tatum’s postseason run has been cut heartbreakingly short. Read More...
