Synopsis

In the past century, design has played a crucial role in the development of an industrialised society and has undoubtedly made a positive impact on our lives through a variety of products and services. It has, however, resulted in a situation that is unsustainable and defuturing. As landfills fill up, natural disasters become more severe, and the gap between rich/poor and urban/rural areas widen, the worldview based on “modern” development may come to an end. Is there a need for alternative worldviews in design that may include the underworld and non-human species? If "speculative design for possible modes of existence" based on alternative worldviews is necessary, then what kind of design is necessary?

The design for our alternative mode of survival has begun...

工業化社会の発展に寄与してきたデザインは、さまざまな製品やサービスの開発を通して確かに我々の生活を豊かにしてきた。だが、その結果として人類にとって持続不可能な状況を作り出してしまった。埋立地が満杯になりつつあり、自然災害が恒常的に激甚化し、貧富や地域の格差が拡大していく中で、近代的な発展を前提とした世界観は終わりを迎えている。今やデザインは人間的尺度を超え、放擲された地下世界の事物や見過ごされた非人間も含めた、オルタナティブな世界観を必要としているのか？そして、オルタナティブな世界観に基づく「ありうる生存様式のための思索的デザイン」が求められているとしたら、それは一体どのようなデザインなのか？

私たちの生存を賭けたデザインが始まった…
