Reportedly, she made her Tamil debut in 1952. It is said that she had sung a few songs in Aan Murattu Adiyaal, which is a Tamil dubbed film. Izhanden Unnai Anbe, Nagaru Nagaru, Paadu Singara Paadalai and Indru Endhan Nenjil are some of the songs she sang in the film.

In 1955, Dilip Kumar's Uran Kathola was remade in Tamil as Vanaratham. In the Hindi version, all nine songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi. In the Tamil remake, Lata Mangeshkar sang the Enthan Kannalan song, which had lyrics written by Kambadasan. Naushad composed the music for Vanaratham.

In 1988, Ilaiyaraaja made Lata Mangeshkar sing the evergreen Valai Osai from Kamal Haasan and Amala Akkineni's Sathya. Even after three decades, Valai Osai remains one of the favourite songs in everyone's playlist.
