Y1 P2 - Scratching the surface, getting under the skin
Stage 1 objective representation 1:10 section
For our second studio group project, we explored how to represent the complexity of space through ‘objective’ architectural methods. We developed surveying and technical drawing skills by producing scaled orthographic drawings of Cemetery Road Baptist Church, a Grade II listed building in Sheffield. My focus was a detailed 1:10 section of the altar and baptistery, capturing the intricacy of its historic interior.
Shifting to a more ‘subjective’ approach to representation, we used creative methods to express personal responses to the church. Drawing on my own memories of church as a comforting space filled with memories of the Korean Christian community in my hometown, I created a lantern inspired by the altar’s ornamentation. Designed to cast delicate shadows on viewers, it captures the warmth, light, and nostalgia I felt within the church and the lasting imprint such spaces have left on my life.

Stage 3 collaborative exhibition showing both 'objective' and 'subjective' forms of representation
The project culminated in a curated exhibition showcasing all our ‘objective’ drawings and ‘subjective’ interpretations of the church, highlighting the importance of context, environment, site, and place in architectural design and demonstrating how spaces can be experienced differently by each individual.
