This project aimed to maintain responsible coastal access along a three-mile stretch of southbound Highway 1 north of Cayucos by constructing multiple stabilized vehicle pullouts. The route was classified as an Officially Designated Scenic Highway in 1999 and All-American Road in 2003, the highest designation under the National Scenic Byways Program. The project also included the removal of abandoned stockpiles that blocked views of the Pacific Ocean, installation of access control fencing, establishment of coastal prairie grassland, creation of native coastal scrub habitat, and removal and control of invasive and noxious plant species. Extensive coordination was required with local partners for funding and approval including the Cayucos Land Conservancy, California Department of Parks and Recreation, and Coastal Commission.
