Burke High School Foundation (BHSF) - 2023 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CRITERIA
The Burke High School Foundation, Inc. and its affiliated Alumni Classes are awarding the following scholarships to members of the 2023 graduating class:
• Two (2) $2000 scholarships to graduating Burke High School students to attend the college of the recipient’s choice
• The Edwina N. Gadsden Scholarship of $2,000 to a student who will attend Johnson C. Smith University
• The Leah and Ridley Monk Scholarship donated by renown author Sue Monk Kidd, in honor of her parents – Two (2) one-time $5,000.00 scholarships
Each of the $2,000 scholarships will be a one-time award, paid over a period of up to 4 years. The total may be used in the first year or during any of the 4 years thereafter for valid costs related to the attendance and matriculation at the select college, university, or post-secondary training institution.
The Edwina N. Gadsden Scholarship is made available through a gift from her estate to the BHS Foundation. The recipient of this award must be attending Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, a college held dear to Ms. Gadsden and her parents.
The Leah and Ridley Monk Scholarship donated by renown author Sue Monk Kidd, in honor of her parents, are two {2} $5,000.00 scholarships. The total may be used in the first year or during any of the 4 years thereafter for valid costs related to the attendance and matriculation at the selected college, university, or post-secondary training institution.
The recipients will be assigned a Scholarship Advocate who will assist in accessing the funds in a timely manner. Funds will be used primarily for college tuition but may also be used for expenses related to college program attendance.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
Be a graduating senior at Burke High School with a grade point average of 2.3 or higher at the end of the first semester or most recent grading period, whichever is the latest record;
Will be entering the freshman year in the upcoming fall semester;
Have a minimum of 700 SAT composite score on the math and verbal sections or 12 points on the ACT;
Have been accepted to an accredited university/college, technical school or an approved post secondary training program.
Applicants must submit the following materials to the BHS Foundation Scholarship Committee at the designed time and place. No exceptions will be made to these requirements. Only authorized members of the BHSF Scholarship Committee may interpret information herein enclosed. Any changes to these requirements shall be published in writing or the current packet of information will be considered as a final for these criteria.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The following are requirements to successfully complete the application process:
The printed submission of an essay, 250-300 words, to respond to the following:
“How are young people impacted by the racism of today?”
The completion of all parts of the enclosed scholarship application form;
a. An official copy of the applicant’s high school transcript, including the latest SAT/ACT scores; The official transcript must be signed by a school official and/or contain the school’s official seal.
b. At least two recommendations using the enclosed Recommendation Form from representatives in the following categories:
a. School academic teacher or administrator
b. Community representative or current employer
c. Extra-curricular activity representative
d. Other, at the applicant’s discretion
Note: Recommendations must be sealed in an envelope and signed on the outside back flap by the person making the recommendation.
c. A resumé which includes extra-curricular activities, community service and school service; and
d. A black and white or color photograph, which will be included in an official announcement of the scholarship winner; or
e. A jpeg photo emailed to eamosg@bellsouth.net.
All application packets must be placed in a large brown envelope and sealed with the student applicant’s signature across the sealed flap.
