Cheryl Swinton believes education has the power to make dreams a reality. Therefore, she has
dedicated her life to educating and empowering children and families. Mrs. Swinton earned both Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Family and Consumer Science from Winthrop
University. Additionally, she received an M.Ed. in Secondary Guidance and Counseling and
Secondary Administration from The Citadel. Accordingly, she taught at Lexington HS,
McCracken Jr. High, and Burke High School. She also served as a School Counseling Director
at Waccamaw High School and a School Counselor at Garrett Academy of Technology.
Currently, Mrs. Swinton serves as Executive Principal of Burke High School. During her tenure,
Burke received national recognition for innovative and engaging instructional projects; increased community partnerships; expanded opportunities for AP and dual credit courses, resulting in students earning numerous college credits through MUSC CURE and CHEER YES; the National Education Equity Lab (NEEL); The College of Charleston Scholars; and D20PCP. Also, notable are building and facility enhancements under her leadership. Prior to leading at Burke, Mrs. Swinton served as an Associate Principal at Wando High School, where she directed the Center for Advanced Studies from 2014-2017 and the Ninth Grade Academy from 2002-2014.
Mrs. Swinton is married to Reverend Dr. William Swinton, Jr. She joins in partnership with him
at the Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolinal as an
advisor to children and families. They are the proud parents of two sons, Major William “Trey”
Swinton, III and John Cameron Felix Swinton, PA.
