"Le soir du 2 décembre 1956, au théâtre du Châtelet, un pianiste inconnu des Français dut bisser trois fois le Concerto en mi bémol de Liszt. L'enthousiasme du public était à son comble. Ainsi, accompagné par l'orchestre des Concerts Colonne dirigé par Georges Tzipine, Gyorgy Cziffra, conquit Paris." by Tele magazine
"I would like to be the first French journalist to mention the name of Gyorgy Cziffra. Perhaps you will have some difficulty to pronounce his name, but he will be famous tomorrow. Since Horowitz(The Horowitz before 1949) I don't remember having heard a pianist so brilliant ...." by Figaro
"'Hats off to Hungarian' - Gyorgy Cziffra, one of Hungary's foremost pianist and winner of the Franz Liszt prize, made a sensational Paris debut at the Colonne Orchestra's Sunday concert in Liszt's E flat piano concerto. The audience reaction was such that these(?????) encores were given before the concert could co??????, a rare and not always welcome inturruption in a symphonic programme" by New York Herald Tribune

"Georges Cziffra created so much excitement in his Hollywood Bowl debut last week that his second appearance there yesterday evening drew one of the largest crowds of the season and one of the most responsive audiences. Cziffra revealed lyric beauty, delicacy, pensiveness and civilized exuberance. one admired the stupendous technique that enabled him to produce sascades of descending octaves, glittering double note passages, shining phrases of ornament. But one admired still more the musicianship and taste that incorporated these physical feats into a demonstration of the genuine and seldom-revealed beauties of this concerto. Cziffra is a welcome recruit to the elite group of great pianists." by Patterson Greene, Los angeles Examiner (Aug 2, 1957)

"The first appearance in England of the sensational Hungarian pianist"
S.A. Gorlinsky presents.
from poster, program note, etc., https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf5NkdJpNXo
"Once in a while occurs a performance that upsets established standards and sets new ones. I had almost given up hope of hearing a fresh pianist who would combine the formidable technique pretty common today with the musicianly sensibility that is all too rare - until the advent of Gyorgy Cziffra at his English debut in the Festival Hall on 21 September. Now in his middle thirties, he was a pupil of Dohnanyi in his native Budapest, where he won the Franz Liszt Prize in 1955, but for political reasons seized a chance to leave Hungary during the tragic uprising last autumn and now lives in France. Those who heard a gramophone record of Cziffra issued here this summer were forewarned of a remarkable artist, but his concert appearance with Alexander Gibson and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra surpassed expectations.
Cziffra played Liszt's E flat Concerto and the Hungarian Fantasia - not a programme to give the full measure of a pianist by any means, but one that in his case left little in doubt. His savage, properly flamboyant treatment of the Fantasia contrasted sharply with sensitive, eloquent playing in the Concerto, wherein he sought - and found - beauty of phrase and spirit beneath the surface glitter and sentiment. No technical feat seemed beyond his agile fingers and powerful wrists, capable of a full range of dynamic shading, mellow tone even in fortissimo and lightning speed, but technique was subordinated to a conception of the music that defined him as an interpretative artist in the best sense of the word. Four solo encores, led by a jet-powered Flight of the Bumble Bee, were demanded before the orchestra could proceed. Mr. Gibson obtained splendidly crisp and clear accompaniments, and added much to the evening's pleasure by his poised and spirited direction of Mendelssohn's 'Italian' and Prokofiev's 'Classical' Symphonies."
