Email and infected sites are the most common ways of spreading malware. However, data theft is becoming a more prevalent problem as social media is increasingly integrated into our daily lives.
Cyberwarfare and Cyber Terror - The Latest Threats
Sophos concluded that cybercrime is no longer motivated by monetary gain. Other emerging threats present new dangers to our interconnected, interdependent world.
According to the report, there are increasing concerns that infrastructures could be vulnerable to remote hijacking, unauthorised control and possibly catastrophic damage. Terrorists now shift their attention to spreading panic. Both activists and governments see the Internet as the next big battleground for political activism. However, online protests of both legitimacy and strength have found new homes.
Hacking is a powerful weapon in certain countries' military arsenals. Some countries have attempted small-scale hacking against embassies and government agencies' websites. This is a serious concern for all countries, even though there have not been any confirmed cases of exploiting core services like power, water supply or traffic control systems. In the UK, the Office for Cyber Security was established in the last one year to defend against cyber attacks and combat the enemy cyber networks.
