For the public: Promote, educate, and advocate regarding EV availability, alternatives, infrastructure, benefits, and legislation. Our EV Owner/Educator members act as a credible source of information for car shoppers.

For our chapters: Enable success through supporting infrastructure, financial assistance, information sharing, and common resource leverage.

For our members: Act as a centralized information source and be a national advocate for owners on EV technology and infrastructure.

History of the Electric Vehicle Association

(Formerly known as the Electric Auto Association)

The Electric Auto Association (EAA) was formed in 1967 by Walter Laski in San Jose, California. In the 70's, two separate gas shortages gripped the country, one propelled by an oil embargo imposed by Arab States. Long lines at gas pumps, alternate fueling days frustrated and angered many.

Some Silicon Valley, CA engineers decided that gas engines had to go. The association grew in response. Sharing the knowledge of converting gas cars to electric helped put more electric vehicles on the road.

These early advocates wanted to create public awareness with the goal of influencing policies to reduce dependence on foreign oil. They also understood, from an engineering perspective, that electric cars are simply a better technology.

Our first chapter was in Silicon Valley, California.

More recently, air quality and climate change concerns have come into sharp focus. With transportation representing over 50% of green house gas emissions, clean fueled electric vehicles (EVs) go a long way towards creating a better future. We work with schools, universities, businesses, health care groups, and governmental agencies to educate about the role that EVs play in combating climate change and improving air quality.

Today, in the modern era of electrification of vehicles, we have many choices of production electric cars. Yet, the public is largely unaware of the benefits. We exist today to change that picture. Our message is a simple one:

EVs are quicker, cleaner, safer, and cheaper to own and operate than gas cars, which are powered by petroleum derivatives that, when burned, emit noxious gases into the environment.

EVs are simply a better technology. And they are fun to drive!

As EV owner/educators, we turn up at events with our cars to talk 1-1 with consumers. Since using electricity to power a car is a "new technology" for most, the validation by an existing EV driver is powerful. National Drive Electric Week, Drive Electric Earth Day, auto shows, Farmer's Markets, Electric Driveway Parties are just some of these outreach events we organize.

Since studies show that new technologies are best sold by "word of mouth", every one of our EV owner/educators is making a huge difference in creating a better future.
