Food Security has become a more prominent issue to Singaporeans especially because of COVID-19. A few months ago just before circuit breaker, we could remember how people were rushing to the supermarkets to create their own stockpile of food at home, worrying that food would run out.
You would be happy to know that Singapore does not ‘put all the eggs in one basket’, but three food baskets instead:
1) Diversify our import sources
2) Grow locally and support local produce
3) Support local companies to grow overseas and the potential for their produce to be exported to Singapore
Earlier this year, we invited officers from Singapore Food Agency (SFA) to share with our students a broad overview on Singapore’s strategy in ensuring food security and how Singapore intends to achieve the 30 by 30 vision, where Singapore can produce 30% of our daily nutritional needs by the year 2030.
Some of our students are even starting to plant vegetables in our gardens. How else can we innovate to increase our food resilience in our land-scarce city state?
