Ice Rally-X
there is no off-season!
Autocross on a frozen lake! Bring your favorite sports car to drive sideways, or bring your daily driver to just learn car control. You can run on winter tires or studded tires, but no matter what there is fun to be had with what you have. There is no better place to learn than right here on the frozen lakes of Central Wisconsin
the future of studded tires
Update 12/11/2023:
We learned some lessons last season with the construction of Spec Studs that ended up missing our goals by a bit. The major lesson we learned was sharpening angle matters a lot. After meetings with CWSCC, FVSCC, and IIRA Icecross, we have made adjustments to the construction of Spec Studs which will allow for the use of Spec Studs across all of the organizations for the future. We are confident that the rule changes and the current rule set will be solid and steady going forward for several years across all organizations.
For the 2023-2024 ice season, ONLY Spec Studs cars will be allowed to participate on studs as notified last year. Unlimited studded tires will no longer be allowed to run the events. Spec Studs from '22-23 season will still be allowed and placed into their own class. These tires will be phased out in the future (DO NOT build new tires to the old rules)
Original Post from 2022:
For the winter of 2022-2023 and going forward into the near future we will be making changes to the type of studded tires that can be used at both CWSCC and FVSCC events. In practice, to maximize fun and safety for everyone, the track design needs to be drastically different for Unlimited studded cars versus snow tire cars. To bring the time delta and speed between the cars closer together so both tire types can have as much fun on the same track design, we will begin limiting studded tire construction for events.
For 2022-2023 the use of Unlimited style studded tires will begin to be phased out. Starting the winter of 2023-2024 Unlimited studs WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to participate at the events. DO NOT build new Unlimited style studded tires for this year. Unlimited studs may be run at events this winter, but those running previously built Unlimited style studs will not be eligible for trophies/prizes and will be placed into an Exhibition class this year. With the number of places to host events and plow tracks always reducing, we needed to start looking at being gentler to the ice so we can use tracks more than one event. If weather and/or ice conditions become unfavorable, Unlimited cars may see reduced runs at an event.
Moving forward we will begin to enforce the use of SPEC STUD TIRES ONLY. Over the last couples seasons several members have joined in building Spec Stud tires with great success and great racing. With the help and feedback from members, we have developed a formula for the number of studs. It is a construction that we feel still provides a car with the studded grip excitement while allowing us to reduce the time delta in runs, improve course design, improve safety, and preserve our tracks for more use.
The spec stud formula is complicated but ensures that regardless of tire size, the density of studs (number of studs per an area of ice) put into the ice at one time is the same for any tire. The formula is slightly different than that previously used but will encompass all previously built tires. For specific Spec Stud class rules please see the Spec Stud Page
