Founding Chittenden Volunteer Fire Department members receiving the American LaFrance Fire Engine from USAF in Burlington c. 1957
After a barn was lost to a fire in 1956, the citizens of Chittenden voted on the creation of a volunteer fire department and the purchase of a fire engine to ensure losses like that never happened again. In 1957, the Chittenden Volunteer Fire Department was formed with 52 original members. A military surplus 1941 American LaFrance fire engine was purchased from the Ethan Allen Air Force Base in Burlington, Vermont for the price of $50.
Land, money, materials, and labor were donated by the generous people of Chittenden, and in the following years, a firehouse was built. Many additions and modifications later, the current fire station still stands on that very same piece of land at 266 Chittenden Rd.
Chittenden First Response was founded in 1980 to provide EMS coverage for the town, SUV purchased in 1983.
