Getting to Toronto

By air: Toronto has two major airports:

1. Lester B. Pearson International Airport (YYZ), on the western outskirts of the city, is a very large airport served by Air Canada, WestJet, and a variety of international airlines. There are several ways of getting from Pearson to downtown Toronto:

• The UP Express train departs two to four times an hour from from Terminal 1 and takes 25 minutes to reach Union Station in downtown Toronto. A one-way trip on the UP Express costs $12.35 (or less if you have/purchase a PRESTO transit card). You can also travel from Pearson to Bloor station for $5.65. From Bloor station it is a short walk to the Dundas West subway station on Line 2. (If your flight arrives at Terminal 3, you can take the intra-airport Link Train to Terminal 1. You will disembark adjacent to the UP Express station.)

• Public transit takes about 50-60 minutes. The 900 Airport Express bus travels from Pearson to the nearest subway station (Kipling, at the extreme western end of the Line 2 Bloor-Danforth route), from which riders can travel east to Toronto. One-way this costs $3.35, paid on the bus; passengers getting off the bus at Kipling remain within the areas inside the fare gates, so can proceed directly to the subway without paying again.

• A taxi or other ride-hailing service from Pearson to downtown generally costs between $65 and $80 (Canadian dollars) and takes about 40-50 minutes depending on traffic conditions and exact destination.

2. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) (also known as the City Centre Airport or Toronto Island Airport) is a small airport located on the Toronto Islands, slightly offshore from downtown. It is served primarily by Porter Airlines, which flies here from various cities in Canada and the United States, as well as limited domestic service with Air Canada Express and FlyGTA. There are two ways of reaching the mainland from Billy Bishop: a tunnel under the Western Channel, or an extremely short ferry ride. Billy Bishop offers a free shuttle to the Royal York Hotel downtown, across the street from Union Station, which contains a subway station. There are also streetcars that can be boarded a short distance north of Billy Bishop ($3.35 per ride) that travel north (511 Bathurst) and east/west (509 Harbourfront). Taxis are an additional option.

By train: Toronto is well-connected to railway routes. VIA Rail offers direct links to Montréal, Ottawa, Sarnia, Windsor, Niagara Falls, and various points in between. Amtrak's daily Maple Leaf service originates in New York City and travels through upstate New York and around Lake Ontario to Toronto. Both terminate at Toronto’s Union Station, which also contains a subway station. Taxis from Union Station are available along Front Street West.

By bus: The new Union Station Bus Terminal (fully physically accessible) is adjacent to Union Station (train/subway) on Front Street West. Megabus and Flixbus travel to/from Montréal, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Detroit, New York City, Baltimore, and locations in between; their fares are especially affordable for early bookings. Greyhound also has a route to New York City. Ontario Northland provides links to Northern Ontario as far as Sudbury.

Comment se rendre à Toronto ?

Par avion : Toronto compte deux aéroports principaux :

1. L'aéroport international Lester B. Pearson (YYZ), situé à l'ouest de la ville, est desservi par Air Canada, WestJet, ainsi que d'autres compagnies internationales. Il existe plusieurs options pour se rendre au centre-ville de Toronto à partir de l’aéroport Pearson : 

• Le train UP Express part toutes les 15-30 minutes de l’Aérogare 1 et vous emmène à la gare Union au centre-ville de Toronto en 25 minutes. Le tarif pour aller simple est de 12,35 $ (un peu moins si vous êtes munis d’une carte de transport PRESTO). Il est également possible d’effectuer une correspondance à la gare Bloor (tarif 5,65 $) qui se trouve à proximité de la station de métro Dundas West où vous pouvez rejoindre la ligne 2. (Si vous arrivez plutôt à l’Aérogare 3, il faudra d’abord prendre la navette « Link Train » jusqu’à l’Aérogare 1 qui vous déposera à côté de la station du train UP Express.

• Si vous empruntez les transports en commun, il faut prévoir un trajet de 50 à 60 minutes. L’autobus 900 (« Airport Express ») relie Pearson à la station de métro Kipling, située à l’extrémité ouest de la ligne 2 (ligne Bloor-Danforth), à partir de laquelle vous pouvez continuer vers l’est jusqu’à Toronto. Le tarif pour un aller simple est de 3,35 $, payé à la montée dans le bus. Le bus vous dépose à l’intérieur des barrières tarifaires, ce qui vous permet de descendre directement au métro sans payer de nouveau.

• Le tarif pour taxi (ou autre service de covoiturage) entre Pearson et le centre-ville se situe généralement entre 65 $ et 80 $ (dollars canadiens). Le temps de trajet varie en fonction des conditions de circulation et de la destination précise mais il est estimé à 40-50 minutes.

2. L'aéroport Billy Bishop de Toronto (YTZ) (aussi connu sous le nom d'aéroport du centre-ville) est situé sur les îles de Toronto, juste au large des côtes du centre-ville. Il est principalement desservi par Porter Airlines, qui relie Toronto à plusieurs villes canadiennes et américaines, avec quelques liaisons domestiques desservies par Air Canada Express et FlyGTA. Afin de rejoindre la ville de Toronto, on peut emprunter le tunnel piéton ou le bateau (la traversée est très rapide !). Une fois à quai, une navette gratuite assure la connexion jusqu'à l'hôtel Royal York au centre-ville, en face de la station de métro Union. Une autre option et de marcher vers le nord pour prendre un « streetcar » (tarif de 3,35 $) soit vers le nord (511 Bathurst) ou est/ouest (509 Harbourfront). Le taxi est une autre option.

En train : Toronto est bien desservie par le réseau ferroviaire. VIA Rail offre des liaisons directes de Toronto à Montréal, Ottawa, Sarnia, Windsor, Niagara Falls et divers points intermédiaires. Le service quotidien « Maple Leaf » d’Amtrak part de New York et traverse le nord de l’État de New York et le lac Ontario avant d’arriver à Toronto. La gare Union est au cœur de la ville et comprend une station de métro. Des taxis sont disponibles au départ d'Union Station sur Front Street West.

En bus : Le nouveau terminus d’autobus (entièrement accessible pour les personnes à mobilité réduite) est situé à proximité de la gare Union sur Front Street West. Megabus et Flixbus relient Toronto à Montréal, Niagara Falls, Détroit, New York, Baltimore et ailleurs. Les tarifs sont très abordables si vous réservez à l'avance. Greyhound assure également la liaison avec New York. Ontario Northland propose des liaisons avec le nord de l'Ontario jusqu'à Sudbury.

Accommodations

There are very few viable hotel options near UTM.  Because of this, we are recommending that out-of-town attendees stay near the St. George (downtown) campus of the University of Toronto instead.  There are many options. Volunteers will be organized to help guide participants to UTM via public transit on the Saturday and Sunday of the workshop.

Alternatively, if you are confident using public transit on your own, staying anywhere near Line 2 (the Bloor-Danforth subway line) is a good idea.

Hébergement

Les options d’hébergement à proximité du campus de l’UTM sont très limitées. Ainsi, nous vous recommanderions plutôt la zone du campus St-George (centre-ville) de l'Université de Toronto qui présente une offre d’hébergement assez vaste. Lors du colloque (samedi et dimanche), des bénévoles se rendront disponibles pour guider les participantes et participants vers le campus de l’UTM dans les transports en commun.

Par ailleurs, si vous vous sentez à l’aise de naviguer les transports en commun sans aide, il est recommandé de choisir un hébergement situé à proximité de la ligne 2 (Bloor-Danforth) du métro.

Getting to UTM

Public transit: The UTM campus is easily accessible via public transit. To get to UTM from downtown Toronto, take the Line 2 subway line (previously known as the ‘Bloor/Danforth’ line or the ‘green’ line) all the way west to Kipling Station.  From Kipling Station, it is a short walk to the 'Kipling Terminal', which is where the bus to UTM leaves from. Follow the signage for 'MiWay'. From Kipling Terminal you can board the Mississauga Transit/‘MiWay’ (not TTC!) bus number 1C from the bus platform 16. The bus takes approximately 40 minutes to arrive at UTM from Kipling Station. We recommend giving yourself an hour and a half to get to UTM from St. George subway station since the 1C leaves only once every 30 minutes on Saturday and once every 40 minutes on Sundays. Extremely important note: not all Number ‘1’ buses stop at UTM; just 1C does this! Please read the front of the bus and confirm with your driver that the bus stops at the UTM bus loop. (If you are running late, it is still possible to take the regular number 1 bus that doesn’t stop at UTM and get off at the Mississauga Rd. stop, but you will have a much longer walk to the conference location.)

UTM Shuttle Bus: There is a shuttle bus service between the University of Toronto's St. George (downtown) campus and UTM, but it does not run at convenient times during the weekend. We do not recommend taking it; however, for your information, the shuttle bus stop is located directly across from Convocation Hall at King’s College Rd. and Galbraith Rd. Shuttle bus tickets can be purchased at Hart House for $7.00 (one way).

Parking: There are several parking lots on campus for visitors.  Lot P1 is located directly beside the conference building but it is not a large lot. Lots P8 and P9 should have plenty of space. The cost for parking is $6 or $7 (depending on the lot) for the day. There are ‘pay and display’ machines in each lot where you can purchase a day pass.

Comment se rendre à l’UTM

Transports en commun : Les transports en commun permettent un accès facile au campus de l’UTM. Pour vous rendre à l’UTM à partir du centre-ville de Toronto, prenez la ligne 2 du métro (également appelée la ligne ‘Bloor-Danforth’ ou la ligne verte) jusqu’au terminus ouest (Station Kipling). À l’arrivée à la station Kipling, il faut marcher quelques minutes jusqu’au « Kipling Terminal », d’où partent les autobus pour l’UTM. Suivez les panneaux indiquant « MiWay ». Depuis la zone d’embarquement, il faut prendre l’autobus 1C du Mississauga Transit/’MiWay’ (pas le TTC !) à partir du quai 16. Il vous faudra environ 40 minutes dans le bus pour vous rendre à l’UTM à partir de la station Kipling. Nous vous recommandons de prévoir une heure et demie pour vous rendre à l’UTM à partir de la station de métro St-George puisque l’autobus 1C ne passe que toutes les 30 minutes le samedi et toutes les 40 minutes le dimanche. Remarque extrêmement importante : seul l’autobus 1C s’arrête à l’UTM, pas tous les autobus de la ligne 1 ! Veuillez regarder attentivement l’enseigne à l’avant de l’autobus  et confirmer auprès du personnel que l’autobus s’arrête au « UTM Bus Loop ». (Si vous manquez l’autobus 1C, il est possible de prendre un autre autobus de la ligne 1 et de descendre à l’arrêt « Mississauga Road », mais le temps de marche pour vous rendre jusqu’au site du colloque sera beaucoup plus long.)

Navette UTM : Un service de navette est offert entre le campus St-George (centre-ville) de l’Université de Toronto et le campus de l’UTM, mais l’horaire de fin de semaine n’est pas très convenable. Nous ne vous le suggérons pas, mais à titre d’information l’arrêt d’autobus est situé en face de Convocation Hall au coin de King’s College Road et Galbraith Road. Les billets pour la navette peuvent être achetés à Hart House pour 7,00 $ (aller simple).

Stationnement : Plusieurs stationnements sont disponibles pour les personnes visitant le campus. Le stationnement P1 est situé à côté du site du colloque, mais il n’est pas très grand. Les stationnements P8 et P9 risquent d’avoir davantage de places disponibles. Le tarif de stationnement varie de 6 $ ou de 7 $ pour la journée (selon l’aire de stationnement choisie). Dans chaque stationnement, des bornes de paiement permettent l’achat du coupon-reçu qu’il faudra afficher sur le pare-brise de votre véhicule.
