Featuring crushcastles23
This month, we are featuring Warp, a project being developed by crushcastles23. For more information about the project, check out its design document: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1nvMKYJGjkFaosQJvsiMlb6Qhk7PQjZzs0A98niHipNQ/edit?usp=drivesdk
In a few sentences, what is the premise of Warp?
"If you can't save the plane... Save the Multiverse
Begalanis is a doomed plane. The Slivers have spread from one end of the universe to the other. They can’t be stopped. Soon, all organic matter will become one with the hive. First the plane, then the multiverse. Vershina and ClA.I.re are the only hopes of the multiverse. Vershina, an avatar, a being of pure magic. ClA.I.re, a construct, a being of data. The only things not corruptible by the Slivers. They must race to the center of the universe so they can destroy the plane to save the Multiverse.
Warp is the third set in the Beyond the Event Horizon block, following up the eponymous set of the block and Twilight City Stories."
What inspired you to begin creating Warp?
"I wanted to do something different than what I had done before, so I wanted to go to the far flung future. I had a lot of time working on moderate fantasy sets, then Custom Chaos Cube, which was Future Sight turned up to 11. I did want to keep it weird, which is how I wound up with a world where time doesn't work right anymore because of overuse of time travel, causing their tech tree to be maxed out. This began to open rifts to other planes..."
Where would you say Warp is in the development process?
"Warp is very close to being uncommon and common complete, currently it's common complete."
Warp is the third set in the Beyond the Event Horizon block. Blocks are a daunting concept for many custom designers, as they entail an immense amount of planning as well as creating narrative and mechanical throughlines. How have you approached this task, and what advice do you have for other custom designers who are interested in building blocks?
"Don't walk into a set thinking it's going to be a block. Walk into a set thinking it's going to be a set that's open ended and has a lot of mechanical space available. I didn't start BTEH thinking there was going to be more than one set and I didn't walk into Twilight City Stories thinking that I'd be making Warp.
Focus on an element of a larger whole. BTEH was the weird space set, while TCS focused down on one city world, and now Warp is the universe against the Slivers, exploring cosmic horror and astral beings.
Find as much art as possible. The main ArtStation collection I'm working from for this block has 2200 pieces and counting.
Be okay with it not being a block after all. If you get one set done and a handful of cards, that's still great. If you get two sets done, that's amazing! I've been doing this for over a decade and this is the first time I've gotten to a third set and before this block, I've only had a single two set block come to fruition and the second set sucked so bad I did a remaster years later."
Scour is a custom mechanic that shows up in several of your sets. What went into the decision to create your own custom evergreen mechanic, and how has it helped in the development of your block?
"Scour came from me wanting to do Seek in paper. It actually didn't come into existence until Twilight City Stories, but I've worked with it in my last four sets. For a mechanic to be evergreen, it needs to be expansive. You don't need to make it kicker wide, but it needs to be wider than evolve. The main thing I've learned is to establish a guide to how it's used. I have written out what each color can scour, how prevalent it is, and how it comes up in each color. "
What is your favorite card in Warp?
"Vision of the End. I love cards taken to the logical extreme and Vision of the End takes the Charge mechanic to the extreme. Charge came from Custom Chaos Cube originally and I've loved it ever since."
Would you like to give any special thanks to anyone on this server for their help?
"I gotta thank Alexander, DrChillbrain, and PTM as always, I have to thank Sing (creator of the Exotic mechanic), Feline, Ensorceler, DrChipmunk, Silas, and CovetedPeacock, as well as everyone who has given feedback for their support in the channel. I also want to thank Cajun, who is the reason a lot of this hobby as a whole is possible."
