Masterclass, heirloom quality ukes. Ive been playing for 20 odd years, been to multiple shows, Ive seen and handled it all. Solid, uniquely handcrafted ukes with extreme attention to detail. Not only is Jack a master craftsman, he has a great eye for exotic lumber and hes such a gentlemen. Hope to do a build with you in the near future , thanks Jack!!

It’s a beautiful Uke that arrived within two days of placing the order. It helps that I am only one state over but the Uke was packaged very secure and safe. It is too early to comment on playability but sounds very nice after tuning. It’s a great looking Uke for all but professional musicians imo. Thanks Top Hat, beautiful work!

I love the all koa tenor ukelele I purchased from Jack ! The nice gloss finish brings out the beautiful wood grain . The resin Teddy Bear design perfectly done makes it very unique as well as the oval sound port . The ukelele has a full rich sound with lots of projection . The ukelele exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend Jack as he was kind and answered all my questions in a timely manner. I was interested in four of his ukes and he made me videos of each one without hesitation .

This particular ukulele came in damage. It was damaged in shipping. The merchant had packed it very well and had labels everywhere that it’s fragile. But our postal system was very careless about this shipment. However, from looking over this ukulele I would say it is beautiful! Too bad USPS ruined it. Anyway, Jack replaced my Ukulele quickly and this ukulele I can honestly say is the best sounding Ukulele I own. I own 2 brand name ukuleles and Jazz Hat brand is comparable if not equal to the brand names I own. This Ukulele will be a very special one for me as I have not only obtained a quality, beautiful Ukulele but I feel I have met a friend! I highly recommend doing business with Jack. His workmanship is awesome and his work ethic is excellent. Thank you Jack for everything you did for me! I truly love my Ukulele!

I’ve been fortunate on my ukulele journey to have acquired some very fine instruments made by the big companies, both on the Island and here on the mainland.
I love the perfection of these instruments and the heritage that brought them into being.
But I’ve found myself equally enamored with instruments made by ‘small shop’ luthiers. Instruments made by a single dedicated person who enjoys the making as much as we enjoy the owning and playing.
I’ve found it exciting to search out some of these people who may not be know as widely as others and who create special gems that are waiting to be discovered.
I recently wrote an NUD about finding Bill Neely, an amazing craftsman from Appalachia who mostly made Mountain Bluegrass guitars for local artists.
I was fortunate to acquire one of his few ukuleles and I consider it to be a true treasure.
Today I received another gem from a California luthier who is new to me but was known by some of us here on UU.
His name is So Cal Jack and his company is Jazz Hat Music. Www.jazzhatukuleles.com
He has made over a hundred lovely looking instruments, all of which can be seen on his website.
I found him on Reverb where there were five or six of his ukuleles for sale.
I chose this one.This is a tenor scale instrument made from solid Caribbean Rosewood (also known as Che Chen).
The fit and finish on it is excellent for the most part.
The finish is a gloss French polish, which is quite nice except for a few insignificant spots.
There is a side sound port that is dressed with a lovely rosette of a variety of hard woods, as is the main sound hole.
The wood itself is new to me and I was very pleasantly surprised by the lovely grain and rich color.
The headstock is also faced with this wood and displays the Jazz Hat logo.
Tuners are adequate sealed geared tuners.
All in all I was very pleased with the overall look and feel of this instrument.
The only thing that I feel I should report that I would have liked to see done better is the fretboard. SoCal Jack has made the effort to dress up this ukulele with a rope purfling that looks wonderful all around the body front and back, as does the dark wood binding, but he has extended the purfling up along the surface of the fretboard and around the headstock.
Although it’s a nice touch on the headstock, it and the fretboard edging did not come out so well. I think there is just a little too much going on with the fretboard and it comes off as being poorly put together. He might have been better off with a simple cleanly finished fretboard rather than these extras.
This is a minor complaint on my part and doesn’t take much away from this lovely instrument. It’s a joy to hold and has a fine neck that’s easy to play. (Although a satin finish here would be nice) It is not heavy but not a lightweight either, a comfortable weight.
Other than the fretboard the over all quality of this instrument is excellent and compares with ukuleles costing far more. (This model was well under $600)
And the sound…
These are new stings that are still settling in. ( it comes with Worth Browns low G), but already there is a very rich and resonant tone to this instrument. I’m very happy with the sound and feel that SoCal Jack has chosen wisely with these strings.
I will provide some better sound sample as the ukulele settles in, but here is how it’s sounding today.

I finally got my ukulele. I'm having fun playing.
The neck is very comfortable to play it's been years since I played a small Ukulele.
I wanted something for my students to share with them so that it isn't hard to play the smallest size of the ukulele family. It's all about technique.
The price is very reasonable.
It's rough made uke.
But you know what if you want a handmade all solid wood instrument and that is affordable you need to look at JAZZ HAT MUSIC UKULELES

5 stars because 6 was not an option. As a new ukulele player and non-musician, I had loads of questions that Jack answered promptly and in great detail. Jack was simply a pleasure to work with! Ukelele arrived early, packaging was extremely well done with tons of personal touches! It is obvious that Jack LOVES making ukeleles and sharing them with fellow enthusiasts. SOUND: Lovely sounding Mahogany instrument. Ever so slightly louder C string compared to the others, but overall very balanced tone! ACTION and PLAYABILITY: Very good! Jack set this ukelele up wonderfully! Action is great! You WANT to play it! Jack is a great seller to work with, and he makes some really nice and unique instruments. I’m happy to have a real hand made solid wood instrument made right here in Southern California. It came with a pickup, and I was surprised to hear just how good it sounds plugged in. This instrument does have a few minor cosmetic flaws, but Jack fully disclosed all of them in the description, and they don’t bother me at all. Highly recommended!

I have several custom ukes from other builders, and this unique instrument is one of the best—at considerably less in price. Solid Koa tenor beautifully constructed with a fantastic sound. Don’t be concerned about buying a uke unable to try before buying. You won’t be disappointed. Cool designs, with an ear for sound is Jack’s specialty. I will be placing another custom order. Jack will work with you on your own design. He does things right—you won’t be disappointed! I wanted a unique ukulele which I got with this purchase. The design is one of a kind…to my collection. The sound is great. I wanted to customize my string “feel” so asked for and got an additional nut, bridge and set of strings. Jack provides the best service.

This is my third ukulele purchased from Jazz Hat Music and once again it exceeded my expectations. The ukuele is a koa wood long neck soprano pineapple ukulele and has remarkable build quality utilizing solid woods and good finishing. I put aguila red strings on it and am blown by the tone and sustain coming from a small instrument. I highly recommend Jazz Hat Music ukulele’s to anyone wanting a quality instrument rather they are a advanced player or a novice.

This was my second ukulele purchased from Jazz Hat Music and it did not disappoint, in fact it surpassed my expectations with its beautifull construction and wonderful tones. Great ukulele at a great price with fast shipping and excellent customer service. When I ordered this ukulele I wasnt sure what to expect but it arrived quickly and was beautifully made with great finish and excellent playability , in fact I liked it so much that after recieving it I ordered two more ukuleles from same seller.

The quality of materials used, build and playability far exceeded the amount paid for this ukulele. The ukulele on pure aesthetics alone, the use of solid Hawaiian KOA wood finished in a French Polish and infinity side sound port is absolutely beautiful. Even if the ukulele was never played, it is a work of art that could be hung and make any ukulele enthusiasts proud to have in their collection, however I purchased this ukulele to be played. Play it does, it has wonderful tonal quality, great resonance, good sustain. More importantly, the action came already set up to my preference and the intonation is excellent. This is a wonderful instrument and SoCal Jack was very responsive to my inquiries both prior to and after my purchase. I am very pleased with my purchase.

My purchase was an excellent value for a unique uke. It plays easily, has good sustain, and the tone attributed to Monkey Pod, between the mellow of Koa and brighter of Mahogany. I requested a sound sample that I received within hours. Shipping was prompt and my uke was well packed. It came with extras: Worth brown strings, a soft case, basic humidifier, microfiber cloth, , Jazz Hat and Circle of Fifth stickers, and a write up explaining how to use the circle of fifths. I consider the passive pickup an extra as well. You often pay more for a uke with a pickup. The uke sounds good played with or without the pickup which often isn’t the case. The finish was slightly rough to touch on the sides but not eye visible. The rest is smooth. The fret ends are smooth. I’m an amateur uke player but play other instruments.
