The second tournament of Revolution’s ninth rotation concluded this past month at Grand Prix Bulvem! After a series of power level adjustments shook up the format, 18 players took to the battlefield wielding decks across 14 different archetypes, including old favorites like UW Control and some exciting new players like Mono-U Tempo and GB Pharika’s Culling!
The finals brought together two highly unique decks. Dodger brought a RG Heroic-like deck, which uses a combination of cheap creatures that get huge benefits from being the target of spells and cheap ways of targeting them in order to crush the competition with exorbitant amounts of damage. Standouts in this deck include Treasury Pilferer, which provides the deck with a reliable source of card flow and mana to fight through interaction, and Manic Coreling, a 1/2 with conditional double strike that it’s very easy to pump up to lethal!
Opposing Dodger was AllWhoWander with Table Flipping, a unique WB enchantments deck that plays enchantments with enters the battlefield triggers like Course of Correction or The Path of Phenax to trade one-for-one with his opponent, then eke out additional value by flickering them with cards like Start Anew and Planar Exodus. And of course, two copies of Planar Exodus create a cyclic loop that allows the deck to generate an escalating level of value turn after turn!
After three hard-fought games with significant back-and-forth on both sides, AllWhoWander emerged victorious by the skin of his teeth! When asked about the secrets to his deck’s success, Wander expressed surprise about how well the deck had performed despite some suboptimal card choices. “The deck was incredibly fun and skill-testing to pilot, with a number of clutch moments, and really felt like nothing I’ve ever gotten to play in canon standard!” When asked about his favorite card in the deck, Wander pointed to Start Anew. “Start Anew was so flexible — flickering oblivion rings mid combat to pick a better target and prevent nasty attacks, flickering discard spells in my opponents’ draw steps to deny them cards, flickering aura targets to prevent them from resolving, transforming blessings back into the creatures that create them, and even just as ramp in a pinch!”
Congratulations to Wander, well fought to Dodger, and remember: if you’re interested in playing some awesome custom magic, the best time to join the revolution is now!
