Curtain lining materials are part of curtain manufacturing, and they offer functional as well as beauty advantages. Lining materials are stitched on the reverse side of the main curtain material and help to maximize the performance of the curtain as much as insulation, light blocking, privacy, and durability are concerned. Although linings cannot be seen from the front side, they are the most significant contributor to making curtains more effective and beautiful.
There are a variety of linings for curtains, all designed to perform a certain purpose. Plain linings, generally made from cotton or cotton-polyester, shield the curtain material from the sun, lessening fade and wear over time. They also provide a sharper drape and can enhance the appearance of the way the curtains hang, showing them to be neater and trimmed. Blackout linings are also very much in favor, mostly used for bedroom and media room application. Blackout linings consist of tightly woven, heavy fabric or coated in a manner that they completely cover almost all light, resulting in total darkness and increased privacy. They also dampen sound and even help in the control of room temperature.
Thermal linings are actually made to use as insulation. Thermal linings prevent indoor heat from escaping and retain warmth in cold months and reflect heat in hot months. Thermal linings are usually constructed of acrylic or foam-backed materials, which save energy and money in the long term. Interlining is a thin layer of fabric that sits between the lining and the top fabric and provides thickness and heaviness to make the curtains look luxurious and plush. It also enhances the insulating and soundproofing characteristics of the curtains.
