Comparing Characters: Scrooge and the Grinch

Read the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Think about the character of the Grinch and the character of Scrooge- how are they alike? How are they different? Consider how their pasts influence the present, how they are treated by the people around them, and ultimately what causes them to change. Record your thinking in the Venn Diagram below.

Writing Prompt: Does Scrooge REALLY Change?

At the end of the play, Scrooge embraces kindness and compassion and joins his friends for Christmas dinner. Write a story about what happens AFTER the play ends? After the holiday season is over, does Scrooge continue to live his life a changed man? Do the Ghosts of Christmas visit him again? What happens with his relationship with Fred? Be creative!

Understanding Context

In order to understand a story to its fullest, we as readers, need to understand who the author is and when the story was written. A Christmas Carol  was written by Charles Dickens a long time ago- in 1843- and the story is set in London, England. Let's use our research skills to learn about an author who lived in a very different time and place than us! Use the websites and graphic organizers below to conduct and record your research.
